10.6.4 Taicuba Trio.

The Taicuba Trio, which debuted on the Bacardí program on August 15, 1947, debuted with a national song, although its members were more famous as tango singers than as bolero singers or interpreters of the broad Cuban musical spectrum. Its members at the time were Baz Tabrane, Landa, and Llerena, long before the trio format that would later become legendary: José Luis Martínez, Alfredo Cataneo, and Baz Tabrane. They found the harmony of three voices, even though the Latin American scene was dominated by famous trios like Los Panchos, Los Vegabajeños, Los Tres Diamantes, and Los Tres Ases.

They performed lyrical songs: María de la O (Lecuona), Marta (M. Simons), Júrame (M. Grever), and the classic Mi Habana (My Havana) by Ray Tico of Costa Rica. The Taicuba Trio participated in the Cuban films Romances del Palmar and Una gallega en La Habana, two highly successful films starring Rita Montaner and Niní Marshall, respectively.

They toured Venezuela and then the United States, where they participated in a famous CBS program broadcast coast to coast. They recorded only one full-length album and a few singles, which in the late 1950s was quite insufficient considering the musical quality they displayed.

Its “natural” setting in the famous and international Havana restaurant El Floridita (Obispo No. 557, Old Havana, Havana City), is more than enough for an audience from different latitudes to appreciate the values promoted by these three highly coupled voices in a smooth sound.

Throughout their artistic career, Taicuba has shared the stage with Cuban music greats: the duo Clara and Mario and the voice of Barbarito Diez, for example. Many of the songs they perform are compositions by Baz Tabranes, songs that have in turn been sung by prestigious Cuban artists.
