11.14.4 Political Song Day

Political Song Day is the longest-running event sponsored by the Hermanos Saíz Association (AHS), and this year, as every August, it was celebrated for the thirty-fifth time in Guantánamo province.
Every August 4th, the 35th National Day of Political Song honors the memory of five young people who died that day in 1957 as a result of the explosion at a bomb factory belonging to the 26th of July Movement. On that day, the Guantanamo Martyrs’ Day celebration features a traditional pilgrimage from José Martí Central Park to the Obelisk, where tribute is paid to the young men Fabio Rosell del Río, Gustavo Fraga Jacomino, Enrique Rodríguez, Jesús Martín Leyva, and Abelardo Cuza Navarro.
This event, in addition to honoring the memory of the fallen, aims to contribute to the promotion, cultivation, and development of troubadour songs with a political and social content within the young artistic avant-garde scene throughout the country. Within the framework of the event, concerts will be held in various venues in Guantánamo, such as workplaces, educational and healthcare centers, as well as in the neighborhoods surrounding the city center.
Recently, the Political Song Festival was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the creation of the AHS and the 50th anniversary of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC).
These events feature a host of poets, storytellers, audiovisual producers, and visual artists, in addition to the already renowned Cuban troubadours. Participants come from all corners of the island.
