11.7.13 Alberto Tosca Sánchez


Alberto Tosca Sánchez, a prominent Cuban composer and guitarist, was born on March 12, 1955, in Havana. He graduated with a degree in music and singing from the Ignacio Cervantes Conservatory of Professional Development, where he studied classical guitar, Cuban percussion, complementary piano, harmony, counterpoint, and fugue, among other musical subjects.

He is a renowned exponent of the Cuban song movement known as Nueva Trova, which he joined in the late 1970s, in 1978 to be exact. Around that time, Tosca was performing at the Almendares Park amphitheater, where other singer-songwriters such as Santiago Feliú and Alberto Cabrales also showcased their musical work. In 1980, his piece “Paria” was released during the Adolfo Guzmán Competition.

He joined forces with renowned singer Xiomara Laugart, with whom he worked on the Isle of Youth, to form a duo. Alberto Tosca performed with the Manguaré Group and Rafael de la Torre at the Berlin International Political Song Festival.

We Are Still Standing is the name of one of Tosca’s concerts, which took place in December 2003 at the Che Guevara Hall of the Casa de las Américas (3rd and G Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). On that occasion, he was accompanied by a collective of Cuban star musicians: José Luis Cortés (flute), Roberto Carcassés (piano), Axel Tosca Laugart (piano), Juan Leyva (guitar), Haydee and Suylen Milanés (vocals), Néstor del Prado (bass), Romny Barreto (drums), William Roblejo (violin), Martín Melendez (cello), Yaíma Fernández (viola), and Carlos Sarduy (trumpet).

Another concert he has given is titled All Poetry, held in the courtyard of the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Cultural Center, where he performed songs he has composed throughout his artistic career. In 2004, Alberto Tosca was the star of the musical event A guitarra limpia.

He has performed his music on numerous stages, including those in countries such as the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Russia, France, Canada, Belgium, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Finland, Mexico, and Curaçao. He has appeared at musical events such as the Varadero International Festival and film festivals.

In his musical career, Alberto has also collaborated on the musical compositions of works for the theater group Pinos Nuevos, known as Pinedas. He is a member of the Latin Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, Inc. (LARAS), Los Angeles, California. He also belongs to the National Center for Concert Music.

In addition to being a performer and composer, he is also a music producer and arranger. Many of his pieces are included in the repertoires of Tania Libertad, Gilberto Santarosa, and Carlos Santana, among others.

Throughout his successful musical career, Alberto Tosca Sánchez has shared the stage with countless musical figures, including Alfredo Zitarrosa, Amaury Pérez, César Portillo de la Luz, Silvio Rodríguez, Pedro Luis Ferrer, Tania Libertad, Pablo Milanés, Inti Illimani, Fito Páez, Chico Buarque, Sonia Silvestre, María Betania, and Daniel Viglietti.

In his works, we can appreciate the influences of great Cuban and foreign musicians, including Noel Nicola, Joan Manuel Serrat, Vicente Feliú, Silvio Rodríguez, and Amaury Pérez Vidal. Alberto Tosca’s compositions also contain traces of musical genres such as rock and rumba. He even uses batá drums in some of his pieces. He cultivates, among other genres, bolero, son, ballads, beat, pop, and guaracha.

His wealth as a composer, which exceeds seven hundred songs, includes titles such as: Open that Jasmine, Love of This Time, Birds Within, Song to an Old Troubadour, Song to Awaken My Love, and Cubanness. Among his Dances: Little Mirror; Cuban Fairy; Son; Islands; Youth, Honeycomb and Star; Crazy Star; Matamorina; Not a Ya No estás; There is No Room for Despair; Pineras, Prometheus; Sowing for You; Trovada; Yemayá.
