11.7.6 Eduardo Ramos


Eduardo Ramos, a prominent Cuban troubadour, was born in 1946 in Havana. In his musical career, he also works as an arranger and record producer. He is one of the founders of the Cuban song movement known as Nueva Trova. In the late 1960s, he participated in the Protest Song gatherings held at the Casa de las Américas (3rd and G Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana).

He joined the Sound Experimentation Group of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) in 1969 and remained there until 1973. He composed music for films there. He served as president of Nueva Trova from 1980 to 1986. He also served as director and arranger for Pablo Milanés’s group.

He has also worked as a record producer. His work includes Silvio Rodríguez’s Trípticos series. His excellent output includes more than one hundred phonograms, produced between 1998 and 2004 for the Unicornio label.

In 2008, Eduardo Ramos participated in the Cubadisco International Fair as a judge. In June 2010, he gave a concert at the Che Guevara Hall of the Casa de las Américas (3rd and G Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). On that occasion, he was accompanied by his own group, Sexto Nombre. He performed seventeen songs, almost all from his own body of compositions and others by composers such as John Coltrane, Pablo Milanés, Chucho Valdés, and Sindo Garay.

Their group is made up of young Cuban musicians, among whom are Elías Fayat Franco (keyboards), Alain Michel García (electric bass), David Díaz Hechavarría (electric guitar), Wismer Torres Jiménez (drums), Jorge Valtuille González (percussion) and Nora María Martínez Llanes (singer).

As a composer, Eduardo Ramos’s lyrics reflect everyday events. He also sings of love through them. He uses simple yet poetic language. One of his best-known is “Su nombre es pueblo” (Their Name Is the People).
