10/12/17 South of my Backpack

Al Sur de mi Mochila (South of My Backpack), a prominent Cuban trova festival, established in 1999. This event is sponsored by the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) of the city of Cienfuegos and is held annually.
The program takes its name from a song composed by Lázaro García, founder of the Nueva Trova (New Trova) in central Cuba.
In 2010, in its 11th edition, in addition to other troubadours and Trova groups, the Havana groups Ray Fernández y su Mono Líquido and Enfusión performed in concert at the Tomás Terry Theater ().
The 12th edition of the Jornada de Trova Al Sur de mi Mochila, corresponding to the year 2011, was dedicated to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the organization of young Cuban artists. Its main venue was the Tomás Terry Theater () in Cienfuegos.
Numerous artists and groups performed during the event, including Lázaro García, the duo Los Novos and Ariel Barriero, Sadiel Madrazo, and Rolando Ribera, among others.
On that occasion, a special edition of the peña was held, led by singer-songwriter Nelson Valdés, who will combine strings and vocals with other performers of this musical genre.
Al Sur de mi Mochila helps gauge the creative potential of the new generations of Cuban singer-songwriters, and also provides a wonderful opportunity to replicate and disseminate the constant renewal of compositions belonging to the Cuban songwriting movement known as Nueva Trova.
