12.11 Vocal Ensembles in Cuban Music in the 20th Century (1980-1999)

It can be said that vocal groups of various formats, whether duos, trios, quartets and others, that perform Cuban popular music, are part of a tradition, since they began to emerge since the mid-20th century and have remained present in Cuban music, harvesting diverse musical genres such as Son, Feeling, Bolero and others.
As successors to one of the most famous vocal groups in the history of Cuban music, Los Nuevos Zafiros emerged during this period, restructured by a former member of Los Zafiros, Eduardo Elio Hernández (El Chino). They made their debut with the Aragón Orchestra on Radio Progreso. They have taken their music to important events such as the Boleros de Oro Festival.
Vocal Sampling is another outstanding vocal group in Cuban music. They are an a cappella vocal ensemble, something unusual since they don’t use musical instruments. Instead, they use their own voices to imitate the sounds and harmonies of multiple instruments. This has quickly captured the attention of both national and international audiences.
Vocal Sampling’s repertoire includes acclaimed Cuban songs such as “El Cuarto de Tula” and “Guantanamera,” as well as covers of foreign songs such as “Hotel California.” Highlighting her discography is the album “Cambio de Tiempo,” which earned three Grammy Award nominations.
Comprised of four young women, Sexto Sentido boasts a broad repertoire that covers a wide spectrum of musical genres such as Trova, Rhythm & Blues, Danzón, Bolero, Nueva Canción, and Jazz. They have received several awards, including the 2007 Cubadisco Prize.
Vocal LT is a vocal group founded in 1997 by Carlos Díaz Laportilla. Initially a purely vocal group, their work consisted of imitating the sound of an orchestra with only their voices. Their repertoire includes a variety of musical genres. This is a unique musical project of its kind in Cuba, as, unlike others, they present a challenging approach that combines the sounds of instruments crafted from the human voice with real musical instruments.
Novel Voz is a prominent Cuban vocal group founded in mid-1999 under the direction of Gisela Sosa. Each member plays a distinct role within the group, in terms of costumes, makeup, choreography, and overall image, as dancing and acting are integral parts of the show in each of their performances.
Using voice as their sole sound resource and with a unique accent, Novel Voz is part of the experimental musical movement that emerged in the 1990s, a period in which the vocal group Sampling pioneered this type of music in Cuba and from which the original project has been greatly influenced. Unlike Sampling, which uses onomatopoeic sounds to imitate musical instruments, Novel Voz relies more on the harmony offered by the feminine timbre, and this is precisely what distinguishes them.
