12.12.2 Exaudi Chamber Choir


The Exaudi Chamber Choir was founded in the late 1980s, specifically in 1987, by María Felicia Pérez Arroyo, who has served as its director ever since. The choir’s name in Latin means “Listen!”

Exaudi is comprised of highly capable professional musicians who graduated from both the Instituto Superior de Arte de Cuba (ISA) (1110 Calle 120 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana) and the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory’s High School Level (Rastro No. 1 and Espada Street, Centro Habana, Havana), in various specialties. These include: Musicology, Flute, Choral Conducting, Horn, Percussion, and Guitar.

The Exaudi Chamber Choir showcases a vast repertoire in each of its performances. It includes choral works composed from the 15th century to the present day, of European, Latin American, and Cuban origins that are relevant in the field of choral music. Many of the works they perform feature arrangements by prestigious musicians.

Among the works included in the repertoire are: Fire, Fire by Thomas Morley (Madrigal); Ave Maris Stella by Edward Grieg (Sacred Piece of Romanticism); Pater Noster by Alberto Grau; From Requiem by Calixto Alvarez (Contemporary Sacred Pieces); Song of the Coffee Plantations by Alejandro G. Caturla; El Guayaboso by Guido López Gavilán (Hispanic-American Choral Music); Oath by Miguel Matamoros; El Manisero by Moisés Simmons; Son Tributo by Juan Almeida; Mi Merengue by Luis Laguna; Milking Song; Venezuelan Popular Melody (American Popular Songs); among many others.

The Exaudi Choir of maestro María Felicia Pérez has taken its music to various stages around the world through international tours, performing in renowned concert halls in a total of twenty-one countries across Europe, the Pacific, and the Americas. Among the nations that have enjoyed its unparalleled performances are Spain, Denmark, Sweden, Bulgaria, France, New Zealand, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Belgium, Norway, Turkey, Venezuela, Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Argentina, Ecuador, the United States, Australia, and, of course, its home country of Cuba.

Exaudi has also participated in countless international choral music festivals and competitions, winning first prizes and receiving significant awards in many of them.

At the most recent International Choral Music Festival in Cantabria, Spain, Exaudi was tasked with opening the festival with a concert at the Church of San José, which was a notable success.

They participated in the CDs Misa cubana and Salmo de las Américas by Cuban composer José María Vitier. The latter recording was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy in the Classical Music category.

Exaudi boasts a diverse and diverse discography, including a diverse range of phonograms. These include works by prestigious composers such as the Cuban Mass and the Psalm of the Americas by Jose Ma. Vitier, pieces by Esteban Salas, and a recording of Harold Gramatges’ choral work. Latin American popular music also finds its place in the recordings of this brilliant choir.

The discography consists of three CDs with music by Cuban composer Esteban Salas. Three CDs with Baroque music from Peru and Bolivia. A phonogram consisting of works by Spanish Baroque composer Carlos Patiño (1600-1675). Two CDs with arrangements of popular music and concert songs from Cuba and other Latin American countries. A CD of American Songs and Rhythms featuring works from the popular repertoire of several countries in the Americas and Cuban classics from contemporary choral literature. A CD with sacred a cappella works by 20th-century Latin American composers.

Exaudi has received the following awards: First Prize at the Debrecen International Choir Competition (Hungary, 1990); First Prize in Folklore, Third Prize in Polyphony, the Grand Prix and the Audience Award at Tolosa (Spain, 1992); Grand Prix Européen de Canto Chorale in Varna (Bulgaria, 1993); First Prize at the Harmony Festival in Lindennolzhausen (Germany, 1993); Third Prize in the “International Excellence” category in Marktoberdorf (Germany, 1993); First Prize in Folklore and the Prize for the best performance of a Basque work at Tolosa (Spain, 1993); First Prize in Polyphony at Torrevieja (Spain, 1994).

The Exaudi Chamber Choir is recognized worldwide as one of the most prestigious choirs in the Americas and represents Cuba’s fine choral music.
