12.12 Choral Groups of Cuban Music in the 20th Century (1980-1999)


In Cuba, choral music is of high quality, highly respected, and enjoys significant international acclaim. At this stage, choral groups of various types are emerging within the framework of Cuban music.

The Entrevoces Chamber Choir belongs to the Cuban National Choir and was organized by Digna Guerra in the early 1980s. This group’s repertoire includes numerous works from all eras and musical styles. They have participated in various national and international choral events, many of which have received important awards.

Exaudi, a chamber choir founded in 1987 by its director, María Felicia Pérez Arroyo, is made up of professional musicians. Works such as “Canto de los cafetales” by Alejandro G. Caturla; “El guayaboso” by Guido López Gavilán; and “El manisero” by Moisés Simmons are part of Exaudi’s repertoire. They have taken their music to numerous countries around the world, elevating the importance of Cuban music in each performance.

The mixed choral group, founded by Alina Orraca Llama, Schola Cantorum Coralina, debuted at the Covarrubias Hall of the National Theater (Paseo and 39th Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). As a result of this group’s work with children’s choirs, a massive National Children’s Choir Movement has sprung up in Cuba. They have participated in the Mass presided over by His Holiness John Paul II in Havana in 1998. They have performed music from the soundtracks of important Cuban films such as Octavio Cortázar’s “Right to Asylum,” and have also received important choir awards.

The Solfa Children’s Choir, directed by Alina Orraca, is part of the Cantorías project of the Schola Cantorum Coralina. It is the most important choral project carried out with children in Cuba. They have performed in countries such as Spain, France, Canada, and Venezuela. They were nominated for a Latin Grammy Award in 2001. Among Solfa’s other awards are the Cubadisco Prize for Children’s Music (1997) and the Popularity Award at the 3rd Lotto-Quebec World Choral Festival in Canada (2007), among many others.

Euterpe is a prominent Cuban chamber choir, founded in 1993 by talented musicians in Las Tunas. Its fundamental objective is to promote and revive the tradition of this musical expression in the eastern Cuban province. The group’s repertoire includes works from the 15th century and extends to the most popular and avant-garde of the island’s music, without excluding Latin and Caribbean rhythms.

Since its inception, this renowned choir has enjoyed a rapid artistic career within the province of Las Tunas, participating in the most significant national and international events held there.

The vocal group Desandann was founded in the province of Camagüey under the tutelage of Emilia Díaz Chávez, who, in addition to serving as general director, is also a choreographer and singer. Its first performances began in March 1994, the year it was founded.

The group was made up of Haitian offspring, members of that city’s choir. Initially, they dedicated themselves to recovering the cultural riches of their ancestors. Today, it includes members of the Camagüey Professional Choir.

Vocal Leo was founded in 1995 as a tribute to Leo Brouwer, under the direction of Corina Campos. Choreographic and theatrical elements, in addition to excellent music, are part of their majestic performances. They won the 2001 Cubadisco Award for their album Aire Nocturno. Their vast repertoire includes polyphonies, operas, and Spanish zarzuelas.
