Niurka González Núñez, a renowned Cuban flutist and clarinetist, was born in 1977 in Havana. She began her musical studies at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory (660 F Street, Vedado, Havana), located in Vedado, in 1989, specializing in flute with Professor Luisa M. Hernández and clarinet with María Isabel Castro.
In 1991, she won the Grand Prize at the “Amadeo Roldán” competitions, a feat she repeated in 1994, as well as a Mention for Best Performance of Cuban Music. In 1993, she won the Grand Prize at the VI Chamber Music Competition and Conference of the National Concert Music Center, where she received Mentions for Best Performance of Baroque Music and Latin American Music.
Around that time, Niurka González won a prize at the Chamber Music Competition of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba; a Mention for Interpretive Mastery; a prize at the IX José Ardévol Contemporary Music Festival and Competition; and a Mention for Performance of a Cuban Work.
In 1994, he toured Barcelona as a member of the Havana Chamber Music Trio. During that tour, he performed a solo concert, sponsored by the PHONOS Foundation.
In 1995, Niurka González completed her studies at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory (Calle Rastro No. 1, Habana Vieja, Havana), where she studied with Halina Kusiak (flute) and Aldo Salvent (clarinet). She continued her training on these musical instruments with professors Luis Bayard and Jesús Rencurrell at the ISA (Calle 120 No. 1110 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana).
That same year, at the Instituto Superior de Arte’s Musicalia’95 Competition, he won First Place and a Mention for the Performance of a Cuban Work.
She has been a student in Europe of the teachers Alain Marion, Sophie Cherrier, Andras Adorjan and Claudi Arimani.
In 1997, Niurka won First Prize at the Paris Conservatoire de Musique (CNR). In 1999, she received a Gold Diploma in Music, specializing in flute, from the Higher Institute of Arts of Cuba (ISA).
Since 1997, she has been a member of the Ondina Duo with María del Henar. She also teaches flute at the Instituto Superior de Arte (1110 Calle 120 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana). Currently, she is a soloist at the National Center for Concert Music, where she also performs chamber music with other performers, as well as solo work.
In 2009, Niurka González received the Espiral Eterna Award, granted for the first time by the Office of Maestro Leo Brouwer.
Throughout her musical career, Niurka González Núñez has performed as a soloist with several orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the European Community Chamber Orchestra, the Música Eterna Chamber Orchestra, and the Soloists of Havana. She has conducted such great maestros as Leo Brouwer, Enrique Pérez Mesa, Iván del Prado, Jean Paul Penin, Sebrina Alfonso, Bernard Rubenstein, José Cerveró Pizarro, Guido López Gavilán, Iván Valiente, and Eivind Aadland.
She is frequently invited to participate in flute festivals in various countries, including Brazil, Ecuador, the United States, and England, where she has given recitals and master classes. She has also been invited by Maestro Claudio Abaddo to participate in orchestral development courses sponsored by the Gustav Mahler Foundation, held in Ferrara and Bolzano.
He has also made contributions in concert and on recordings with leading figures of Cuban music: Silvio Rodríguez, José María Vitier, Amaury Pérez, Ernán Lopez-Nussa, Liuba María Hevia, Chucho Valdés, among others.
He has also taken his music to important venues in nations such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Argentina, Spain, Chile, France, China, England, Italy, Brazil, Paraguay, and Ecuador.
Among the awards that Niurka González Núñez has obtained we can mention the Grand Prize in the “Amadeo Roldán” competitions (1991 and 1994); Grand Prize in the VI Chamber Music Competition and Conference of the National Center for Concert Music (1993); Prize in the Chamber Music Competition of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (1993); Prize in the IX Festival and Competition of Contemporary Music “José Ardévol” (1993); First Place in the Musicalia’95 of the Higher Institute of Art (1995); First Prize at the Superior Conservatory of Music of Paris (1997).
