12.15.4 Ensila World

Ensila Mundo, a prominent Cuban folk music and dance group, was founded on May 26, 1996, by Francisco Toscano Hernández, who, in addition to being its director, has also served as artistic director, arranger, and composer of most of the songs for several years.

The group has a unique style of bringing rumba to life. Through this group, they revive old rhythms such as bolero, changüí, cha-cha-chá, son, and mambo, in a rumba-like setting and blend these Cuban genres in a unique way, giving their rumba a distinct flavor.

After beginning to work on small neighborhood activities, the need arose to create a group that would not only promote the music and dances they were already performing, but also revive our traditional music, attracting a wider audience. They also supported the Cubarrumba music and dance project, made up of children between the ages of five and ten.

Ensila Mundo is simply the result of a community project undertaken by the Cerro government with the goal of promoting the culture. As part of the style we mentioned earlier, the percussion elements are complemented by choirs and the deep voice of a lead soloist, sometimes female, sometimes male. Since its founding, the group has maintained a peña in the park known as Tío Tom, located in the municipality of Cerro.

From 2008 to 2010, the group has been doing important work in Venezuela. As part of the Corazón Adentro cultural mission, they represent our country and work in different parishes. There, they teach music and create various projects, in addition to showcasing Cuban art in different Venezuelan states.

As a result of the group’s international experience, the idea of fusing Venezuelan joropo with Cuban rumba and chimbagle was born. This will surely be a new approach and a renewed signal to further the rumba style Ensila Mundo works with.
