Lourdes Libertad Beci Torres, a prominent Cuban singer, was born in 1964 in Havana. The daughter of actor Germán Barrios and singer-songwriter Lourdes Torres, she grew up in an artistic environment and sang and acted in many Cuban children’s television programs throughout her childhood. She hosted the popular Sunday youth program Buenas Tardes for over a year, at just 16 years old; she also recorded a children’s music album with her mother during her teens.
At 18, she turned professional, and while taking classes in music theory, solfeggio, and singing, she decided in 1992 to create the vocal quartet Solaris, in which she served as the lead singer. The quartet, which also included another girl and two boys, performed on various musical programs on National Television, as well as in other venues across the country, such as theaters and nightclubs. During one of her performances at the Capri cabaret (Calle 21 e/ N y O, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana), she was invited by composer Alberto Vera to join the cast of the national tour, Para sentir amor.
The versatile singer traveled to Mexico in 1991 as part of the show Fantasía del Caribe and upon her return in 1992 she joined the El Cortijo cabaret, alternating with performances on television and in various theaters.
Lourdes Libertad began her solo career in 1997 and has since performed regularly at the Salón Boleros de Dos Gardenias (302 18th Street, Miramar, Playa, Havana) and other nightclubs in the capital. For several years now, she has held her own weekly slot at the Plaza Cultural Arte Habana and a monthly slot at the Museum of Decorative Arts (502 17th Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana), with her mother, Lourdes Torres, and her daughter, Jessie, in a show titled “Peligrosamente juntos” (Dangerously Together).
Her beautiful voice and her talented performances have also been enjoyed internationally. Audiences in countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, the United States, and the Netherlands have received this charismatic artist with great gratitude.
With her own style of performing Bolero, song, ballad, Guaracha, musical comedy as well as other genres that make up her repertoire, Lourdes Libertad has performed at important musical events such as the OTI Contests in its editions of 1991, 1993 and 1996, in the latter she achieved third place and in the Juan Arrondo Contest, where she won the Grand Prize in 1997. She has also been part of the cast of shows in several editions of the International Boleros de Oro Festival.
Her outstanding artistic talent has allowed her to serve on the juries of various musical competitions and has given her the opportunity to perform leading roles in musicals staged in theaters across the capital. Important composers such as Lourdes Torres, Alberto Vera, Rafael Espín, Mario Veiga, the Diego Sisters, Elesbaan Diez, and David Miranda, among others, have submitted compositions specially created for her.
Maestros such as Frank Fernández and Harold Gramatges have been impressed by Lourdes Libertad’s excellent vocal technique. The temperamental artist was included in the important volume “Notable Women of Cuban Music” by musicologist Alicia Valdés, and in 2006, she was the only performer selected to represent Cuba at the Boleros de Oro International Festival in Venezuela.
Currently, Lourdes Libertad is one of the most representative figures of Cuban songwriting and is part of the musical catalog of La Casa del Bolero Dos Gardenias (Calle 18 No. 302, Miramar, Playa. Havana).
