Joe Michel Maza Márquez, a prominent Cuban musician, was born on March 16, 1978, in Havana. His father, Pepe Maza, singer of the show Tropicana, and his mother, the iconic Cuban singer Beatriz Márquez, complete a wonderful musical family.
He is a former singer of one of the most well-known and followed popular music orchestras in Cuba, La Charanga Habanera, and whom everyone knows as Michel Maza.
The Manuel Saumell music school (Calle F No. 660, Vedado. Plaza de la Revolución. Havana) was his first step, there from an early age he studied piano, until in 1995, when he was barely 16 years old, he joined the ranks of the Charanga Habanera and became the youngest member of the orchestra directed by maestro David Calzado.
He is an artist with exceptional vocal qualities and possesses charisma and incredible stage presence. He is an excellent salsa singer, performing gracefully in a variety of musical genres, including bolero and pop, demonstrating a versatility that confirms him as a true continuator of his family’s musical heritage.
For four years, Michel Maza was one of the singers of Charanga, a group where he popularized songs that became huge hits across the island. El Menor de la Salsa, as he is also known, was with the orchestra until March 1999, when, due to health problems, he had to leave the group that had made him popular among all Cubans.
After nearly eight months away from the stage, he joined La Charanga Forever, an orchestra directed by maestro Isaac Bocalandro. He remained there briefly until 2000, when he founded his own group, Michel y la Bola. This project proved unstable and eventually dissolved, but this didn’t stop Michel, who continued making solo recordings and performing, occasionally accompanying renowned popular dance music groups.
Dogged by misfortune, the young singer suffered a serious motorcycle accident, which caused another setback in his artistic career. Upon his return to the art world, he joined the band Meteoro, which he later left to form his own group, Michel y la tentación.
Michel Maza has participated in several Charanga Habanera albums and in various productions both in Cuba and abroad. He has also collaborated on several international productions by renowned artists such as Pablo Milanés.
In 2004, her first solo album was released on the Envidia label, titled “Fiiieeeeesta” and featuring hits like Lola, Me Sube La Fiebre, Lo Siento Por Ti, among others.
After a brief appearance with the Revé Orchestra, he returns as a soloist and presents his album Let the Talkers Speak, which includes new songs, plus two versions of Super Tourist and Passenger Cloud.
In 2008, Michel Maza recorded Como Gato de Angora, his third solo album, now featuring ten previously unreleased tracks, including Especulando, Muero sin tu amor, Otro en mi lugar, Nada en tu vida, and Que le besen los pies, among others. He is currently the newest member of the national group D Farándula, where he is producing a successful album.
