12.21.18 Oderquis Revé

Oderquis Revé, a prominent Cuban musician, was born in the province of Guantánamo. He grew up surrounded by art. The son and brother of prominent Cuban musicians, he began playing drums at a very young age and later specialized as a batalero.

When Elio Revé Matos invited him to join his Charangón, he had the opportunity to be the first to introduce the batá into a dance orchestra. This group allowed him to achieve great maturity in the musical world under the guidance of maestro Revé, whom he deeply respects and admires. He performed numerous times with this orchestra, but his artistic ambitions prompted him to establish his own orchestra. Thus, Oderquis y su Changüí was born in 1998.

Oderquis Revé has incorporated new rhythms into his orchestra’s repertoire and fused others, but his main focus remains Changüí, one of the most popular genres danced by Cuban audiences. It’s precisely this most native element that fascinates this Cuban musician, and he embraces it with all his characteristic Cuban flavor.

The “Oderquis y su Changüí” orchestra quickly gained popularity from its first performances.

His most recent album, under the general direction of Oderquis Revé himself, is the CD Changüisero de cepa, recorded under the EGREM label. The album features tracks ranging from the oldest Cuban sones to rhythms created from an excellent fusion of Afro-Cuban and Caribbean rhythms.

The album featured prominent guest musicians, including José Luis Quintana (Changuito), Juan de Marcos González, Papi Oviedo, Germán Velazco, Miguelito de Armas, Julito Padrón, and Lázaro Dagoberto González, who also produced it. The album features an attractive graphic design that, combined with Néstor Martí’s photography, achieved excellent recording and mixing.
