12.4.2 Double Edge

Doble Filo, a Cuban hip-hop group founded in 1995, is comprised of Yrak Sáenz (Vitalicio) and Edgar González (Edgaro), who serves as chief producer. In 1996, Doble Filo won the Grand Prize at the Rap Festival and the Best Lyrics Award.

They have taken their music to numerous venues, both nationally and internationally. Regarding the latter, we can mention their fairly frequent performances in the United States. There, in Miami, they participated in an event organized by a project focused on a Cuban group that represents hip hop and rap. They have performed twice, at the Peña del Cultural Center in San Francisco, the first being in 2003. They have also performed at an important contemporary art fair, Art Basel, where they gave a concert in the Transit Lounge.

They have participated in important events such as the World Festival of Youth and Students in South Africa, which they attended as part of the Cuban delegation.

Their discography includes titles such as 2009’s “Despierta,” which was originally a preview of the album, what in some countries is called a maxi-single, called “Despierta version 1.” This single consisted of five tracks and competed in the Cuerda Viva competition.

Currently, Despierta consists of 18 tracks, many of which feature different arrangements. Several Cuban musicians participated in the album, including members of the Havana D’Primera orchestra, Dayramir González, Carlos Varela, William Roblejo, and Harvey Cuní. The musical production was handled by Carlos Díaz and Edgaro.

Currently, Doble Filo showcases a new concept that includes a band, which emerged from the CD Despierta, and various arrangements that reflect the rhythms of Cuban music. They use fragments of Cuban music in their songs.

The band that accompanies this Cuban rap group isn’t a typical band, as they use samplers, sequencers, and machines; their format is composed of bass, drums, and electric guitar. It consists of Carlos Díaz (guitar), David Smith (drums), and Giordano (bass).
