Obsesión’s debut album, Un montón de cosas, was released in 2000 and conceived by the Cuban label EGREM. Producer Roberto Fonseca, a renowned Cuban pianist, collaborated on the album, lending a jazzy rhythm to the final result, separating it from the coldness of the background and the litany of electronic tumbao. In the lyrics of their songs, Obsesión uses everything from street language to Guillén’s texts, incorporating quotes from Cuban popular culture, all with the aim of expressing a way of seeing reality from the perspective of a Black man. They reference prejudice, love, and social violence, among other themes.
Throughout its history, this Cuban rap group has participated in every national festival and event organized by the Hermanos Saíz Association.
Among the awards Obsesión has won, we can mention the Abril Prize, for the high aesthetic value of a work aimed primarily at young people, awarded by the Hermanos Saíz Association.
