12.6.3 Santiago Feliú Sierra

Santiago Feliú Sierra is an important Cuban singer-songwriter; he was born on March 29, 1962, in Havana. He was part of the Nueva Trova movement, and has also transcended the Novísima Trova.
He apprenticed with musician friends of his brother, although he specifically studied with Silvio Rodriguez. At 13, he began to discover artists of his generation who would later join him on stage. In addition, he became familiar with certain literary authors such as Hermann Hesse, Michael Ende, Kafka, and others, who became part of his reading.
In 1978, he auditioned for the Nueva Trova Movement. He performed two songs of his own, Batalla sobre mí and Dime. Pablo Milanés was among the judges, and it is said that when the teenager finished, the already established troubadour said, “I wish someday I could write two songs like those.”
“El Eléctrico,” nicknamed by many, proposes a revolutionary change to the Trova genre through songs that feature a more detailed guitar than that normally used as a pure accompaniment; a more homogeneous composition, between the melody and the structure of the lyrics.
In 1985, he was invited by Silvio Rodríguez to tour with AfroCuba in Spain and South America. They sang together the songs “Historia de la silla” and “Para Bárbara.” During those years, he traveled to Argentina, where he worked with artists such as Fito Páez, León Gieco, and Juan Carlos Baglietto.
Santiago Feliú has performed on stage accompanied by great examples of both generations of Trova such as: Noel Nicola, Frank Delgado, Luis Eduardo Aute, Luis Pastor, Silvio Rodríguez, Vicente Feliú, among many others.
His latest album, Ay, la vida, consists of twelve tracks and was recorded under the Colibrí label. This album preserves the lyrical purity, complex instrumentation, and artistic coherence that have defined Santiago Feliú’s work.
