12.6.6 Norge Batista Albuerne

Norge Batista Albuerne, Cuban musician, composer, guitarist, and singer-songwriter. Born on October 30, 1969, in the province of Las Tunas, he is a young exponent of the Novísima Trova movement in Cuban songwriting.

At 13 years old, Norge Batista was already involved in the world of music and the artistic world of Cuba, specifically in his home province of Las Tunas. His love for the guitar, chords, and verses manifested itself in him from a very young age, so much so that during an interview he confessed:

“My uncles used to scold me for stealing their guitar because I was always after it, until one day a man named Diego Quintero put a guitar in my hands and taught me how to play it.”

Batista has been a member of the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) (National Address: Pabellón Cuba, Calle 23 e/ N y M. Vedado; Plaza de la Revolución, Havana) since 1988. By this time, his work included several compositions, as well as various presentations in the city where he was born.

In 1992, Norge Batista was chosen to be part of a major national event, the “Days of Music Festival” to be held in Havana, a selection made by the Hermanos Saiz Association (National Address: Pabellón Cuba, Calle 23 e/ N y M. Vedado; Plaza de la Revolución, Havana) and which placed many of the best singer-songwriters of his generation on the Cuban national stage, such as David Torrens, José Nicolás, the Trío Enserie, Samuel Águila, Alejandro Bernabeu, among others.

In 1997, this important Cuban singer-songwriter released his first album, titled after one of his most popular songs: “Búscame Adentro” (Look Me Inside), under the Spanish record label Ayva Música. The album was recorded entirely in Havana and produced by Eduardo Ramos.

His titles “Búscame dentro” and “Réquiem por la soledad de un ángel” are fundamental in his repertoire and constitute his contribution to the IV Volume of The Anthology of the New Cuban Trova (1997) in the Ojalá Studios, edited by the Cuban label EGREM and musically produced by Eduardo Ramos and Noel Nicola.

Norge Batista is a member of the José Martí Cultural Society, an important association that brings together prominent intellectuals and creators from Cuba’s cultural world. In 1998, he was honored to become a member of the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) (17th Street between G and H Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana).

In 1999, Norge was invited to participate in one of the most emblematic events of Cuban culture, the Ibero-American Cultural Festival, held in the city of Holguín. At this event, he had the opportunity to interact with artists from several Latin American countries, including the poet Luis Abad and the young writer Moisés Jurado, both Venezuelans.

As part of the major project A guitarra limpia (Clean Guitar) at the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center (Calle de la Muralla No. 63, between Oficios and Inquisidor, Old Havana, Havana), he participated in a major concert featuring the most virtuoso Cuban singer-songwriters of his generation. This concert was recorded live, and the album has been released by the same cultural center under the title “Generación X.”

In countries such as Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, and Spain, his talent has been widely acclaimed. Norge Batista has shared the stage with important Cuban and international artists, including Vicente Feliú, José Aquiles, Ramiro Gutiérrez, Raúl Torres, Frank Delgado, Liuba María Evia, the Buena Fe duo, the Vieja Trova Santiaguera, Eliades Ochoa, the Argentine Rafael Amor, the Spaniard Ismael Serrano, and the Uruguayan Quintín Cabrera.

In 2001, her second album, titled “Algo crece,” was recorded in Santiago de Cuba. The musical production was led by renowned Santiago composer José Aquiles, under the Ayva Música record label.

In 2007, Norge Batista received, along with several other figures of Cuban culture, the medal for the 20th Anniversary of the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) (National Address: Pabellón Cuba, Calle 23 e/ N y M. Vedado; Plaza de la Revolución, Havana), an honor granted to him for his constant work, dedicated for almost 20 years to Cuban music.

An important musical achievement in his artistic career is having participated in the compilation “De Cuba”, released by the Ayva Música label, which includes his famous song “Búscame adentro”.

In the “A guitarra limpia” space of the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Cultural Center (Calle de la Muralla No. 63 between Oficios and Inquisidor. Old Havana. Havana), with song and poetry, together with several guests, he offered his concert entitled Colgado en la pared.

He is currently working on his third album, Puente oscuro, which will be released this year thanks to the efforts of the Spanish label Ayva Música and under the musical direction of Miguel Núñez.

Although he hasn’t published a volume of poetry, Norge Batista has been writing poems since he was very young. As a true son of Las Tunas, the troubadour writes beautiful and valuable décimas.
