12.7.9 Habana Sax

Its members were still studying at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (Calle 120 No. 1110 between 9th and 13th. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana), when in Chamber Music classes they decided to form the Habana-Sax group more than 20 years ago.

In their early days, they explored the works of classical composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov, Debussy, Gabriel Piernét, Jean Rivier, and Jean Absil, also influencing important contemporary composers, including Leo Brouwer, Glenn Miller, Simmons, Gershwin, Jacques Ibert, and Pierre Vellones.

Habana-Sax is made up of virtuoso musicians who not only demonstrate their talent in performance, but also in their communication with the audience. Its members are Jorge Luis Almeida (soprano and alto saxophones and director); Roberto Martínez (alto saxophone, flute, and composition); Eduardo Fernández (saxophone, tenor, and flute); Evaristo Denis (baritone saxophone); and Mauricio Gutiérrez (percussion, timbales, congas, and drums). Together, they have developed a unique musical and performing style.

With a wide repertoire that includes jazz, Latin jazz, and Caribbean music, as well as other rhythms as representative of Cuban popular music as the Cha-Cha-Cha, Son, Danzón, Rumba, Bolero, Conga, and Mambo, Habana-Sax invites you to dance and listen to a different kind of music that, with an authentic Cuban flavor, ingeniously combines blocks of percussion, Afro-Cuban chants, and popular Cuban works, such as its most famous, which include “La Guantanamera,” “El Manisero,” “El Negrito del Batey,” and “Son de la Loma.”

At EGREM Studios (1008 3rd Street between 10th and 12th Streets, Miramar, Playa, Havana) in Cuba, they recorded the LP “Unísono” in 1985 and the LP “Habana-Sax” in 1988. In 1993 they recorded the CD “Salsa Clásica” at Goeland Studios in France and in that same country, but at Dakota Studios, they carried out their 1997 album, the CD “Live Metamorfósis”. Later they returned to EGREM Studios (1008 3rd Street between 10th and 12th Streets, Miramar, Playa, Havana) where they recorded the CD “Ultrasonido” in 2000 and the CD “Brain Stormy” in 2009.

Their numerous appearances on Cuban radio and television stations, as well as on various stages throughout the country, have earned them national acclaim, a success that, thanks to their originality, has grown and spread internationally. Habana-Sax has toured European countries such as Spain, France, Finland, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Germany, Estonia, Poland, Belgium, and Switzerland. They have also performed successfully on stages in countries such as Brazil, the Bahamas, Canada, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Tanzania, among others.
