11/13/15 Diana Fuentes

Diana Fuentes, a prominent Cuban singer and composer, was born in Havana on February 23, 1985. At age 3, she began taking ballet classes with the Pro-Danza company of the Cuban National Ballet (BNC). She enrolled in the Alejandro García Caturla Elementary Music School (1110 120th Street between 9th and 13th Streets, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana) in 1992, where she studied basic piano, choral singing, choral conducting, and music theory.

Her first performances were in national piano competitions, where she won several awards. Under the direction of Professor Carmen Rosa López, Diana Fuentes joined the Diminuto choir, in which she sang as a soloist. With this choir, she had the opportunity to record alongside the Moncada Group and figures such as Roberto Valera and Harold Gramatges. With this group, she performed in several editions of the Santiago de Cuba International Choir Festival and participated in the event organized to welcome Pope John Paul II when he visited Cuba in 1998. During this period, she collaborated as a soloist and chorister on several CDs, including “Canciones de Navidad,” released in 2000 by Andrés Alén under the EGREM label.

The young singer, composer and actress began her professional career in 2001. She took her first steps as a vocalist joining the band Síntesis and that of one of the most brilliant creators of fusion music in Cuba: X Alfonso. With the former she recorded the CD “Habana a flor de piel” in 2002, which obtained a Latin Grammy nomination, and “Ancestros III” in 2003. With X Alfonso she recorded the CDs “Delirium”, “X-More” in 2002, which was also nominated for a Latin Grammy, and later, in 2004, the CD “Civilización”.

In 2004, Diana Fuentes began collaborating with the controversial troubadour Carlos Varela and participated in all of his concerts. In 2006, she officially joined his band, remaining with him until 2007, the year she began her solo career. That year, she won the Adolfo Guzmán Grand Prize for her performance of Roberto Novo’s song “Decirte cosas de amor.”

With important collaborators such as Carlos Varela and Ahmed Barroso, as well as other foreign producers including Miguel Mathues, Echo, and Elie Katz, Diana Fuentes’ solo career began.

With the song “Música de fondo” (her own work and arrangements by Descemer Bueno), she made her first music video under the direction of Pavel Giroud. The video was submitted to the 2007 Lucas Awards and won in the Best Female Video and Best New Artist categories.

The recording of their first CD, “Amargo pero dulce,” began in 2008 under the EGREM label, and was produced by Descemer Bueno. The album is infused with elements of jazz, rock, funk, and hip hop, among other rhythms, blending in perfect harmony with the producer’s excellent arrangements.

Convened by the prominent Colombian singer Juanes, the “Peace Without Borders” concert was held in Havana in 2009, in which Diana Fuentes had the opportunity to participate with Carlos Varela’s band.

Diana Fuentes is one of the youngest trova singer-songwriters in Cuba, but her artistic talent and the beauty of her voice have allowed her to travel a beautiful path since the beginning of her career, as she has had the honor of performing alongside important figures in Cuban music such as Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Carlos Varela, Kelvis Ochoa, David Torrens and Mayito Rivera.

She also worked with Omara Portuondo, Beatriz Márquez (“La musicalísima”), Yusa and Haydee Milanés on a recording project produced by Roberto Carcassés and titled “Women are Beautiful”. She has also participated as a soloist and backing vocalist in the recording of other albums with others, including some equally important ones such as Amaury Pérez, David Torrens, William Vivanco, Aldo López Gavilán, Aceituna sin Hueso, Free Hole Negro and Ogguere.

Diana Fuentes’ artistic career has also explored film, collaborating as a singer on the soundtrack of the film “Miel para Ochún” by renowned Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solás, as well as on the documentary “Vida de Alberto Korda” by Mexican director Alejandro Strauss.

Diana Fuentes married Eduardo Cabra, a member of the urban music band “Calle 13,” in January 2011. The wedding took place in Havana, where they are currently working together on a new album.
