13.12.8 Havana Combination


Combinación de La Habana, a prominent Cuban popular dance music orchestra, was founded in 2005 and directed by pianist and composer Gerson Emilio Valdés. It is a group that primarily cultivates Cuban timba. They made their debut on October 25, 2005, at the Casa de la Música de Miramar (3308 Calle 20, Miramar, Playa, Havana).

It is made up of thirteen musicians with vast experience, most of whom come from Michel Maza’s orchestra. They are: Gerson Emilio Valdés (conduction and piano), Emilio Valdés (saxophone), Azaél Díaz González (bass), Eduardo Leyva Collado (drums and timpani), Eugenio Rodríguez Sierra (singer and piano), Ranses Tolón Aguilera (trumpet), Leonel Medina Fellobe (trumpet), Reinier Rodríguez Hernández (trombone), Alejandro Salazar Padrón (tumbadoras), Maykel Llerena Flores (singer), Oscar Reinaldo Correa (singer), Yurisley Gómez Cambra (singer) and Richard Hernández Montalvo (güiro).

In 2010, Combinación de La Habana achieved great notoriety with their album titled “Moda Habana.” This album features nine tracks, including “La Moda.” During that year, they performed on Fridays at the Café Cantante in Havana’s National Theater (Paseo and 39th Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana) and on Saturdays at the Casa de la Música in Centro Habana (255 Avenida de Italia, Centro Habana, Havana).

Their second production was released under the title Farándula tropical, featuring Tirso Duarte as a guest.

They celebrated their fifth anniversary in Cuban music with a grand concert at the Casa de la Música de Miramar (3308 Calle 20, Miramar, Playa, Havana), where guests included Tania Pantoja and members of Los Van Van.

Combinación de La Habana has performed at several musical events, including the Benny Moré Festival, the Mi Ciudad Baila Festival, and the Son de Cossal Competition. They have also taken their music to the Havana Carnival.
