13.17 Ernesto Blanco Ponsoda

Ernesto Blanco Ponsoda, Cuban guitarist, singer, arranger, and composer. He graduated from the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory (Calle Rastro No. 1, Old Havana, Havana), specializing in classical guitar, with top marks. He later founded a Cuban pop-rock group that was instrumental in the development of this genre on the island.

His solo career began with the recording of his first CD, titled “Kilómetro Cero,” under the Bis Music label. The CD features 11 tracks in a revitalized Cuban pop-rock style. All the songs are Ernesto Blanco’s own compositions, with the exception of “Reinas de la Noche” by LJ Blanco and a few others he shares with his brother David Blanco. These songs were arranged by him personally, and he played virtually all the instruments during the accompaniment.

Ernesto Blanco was part of David Blanco’s band for almost eight years and has participated in several Cuban artists’ albums, as an instrumentalist, singer, arranger, and producer. These include the CD “Sola” by Isis Flores, the first album by the rap group Ogguere, and all of David Blanco’s albums, especially the latest, where in addition to composing some tracks, he also acted as an instrumentalist, arranger, and singer. He also accompanied Haydee Milanés, daughter of the renowned Pablo Milanés, on her album Haydee Milanés en vivo, also distributed by the record label Bis Music.

He participated in the Canada-Cuba big band, which gave concerts in the Cuban capital a few years ago.

Ernesto Blanco has composed music for teleplays that have aired on TV, as well as other regular programs on Cuban television, such as Deja que yo te cuente (Let Me Tell You), Lucas (Lucas), and Jugada perfecta (Perfect Play).

In 2009, Ernesto Blanco won the Lucas Award for Best Video by a Pop Artist for the song “Reinas de la Noche.” As a result of his social work with David Blanco and his group, he has been recognized for several years as a National Vanguard by the Cultural Workers Union. Other awards he received at the Luna Llena festival held in the city of Holguín, where he won the Popularity Award and the Best New Artist Award.
