Vocal Gitano’s is a group founded on November 1, 2004. It represents a young, choreographic format that cultivates various genres, blending foreign sounds with Cuban roots. Its director, Michel Hernández Sanjuán, also served as vocalist for the group Mayohuacán. Initially, the group consisted of six members who came from other Cuban groups such as Dennis y su swing, Megalo, and the Coro Nacional de Cuba.
In 2005, this new vocal group was the musical star of the Sixth Edition of Imagen de Cristal. That same year, they became one of the most broadcast groups in Cuban mass media. They later joined the catalog of the Adolfo Guzmán Provincial Music Center as an exceptional project in May 2006.
Vocal Gitano’s spearheaded the campaign to combat HIV/AIDS on the island and around the world with the song “Yo quiero vivir” (I Want to Live) in 2007 and 2008. This song was included on their first album, released on the Rome-based CNI MUSIC label, licensed by their Cuban counterpart, Bis Music. This song also accompanied their first video clip, directed by Roly Peña, which topped the charts on both Cuban radio and television.
With the support of the Music Institute (15th Street No. 452 corner of F, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana), the Adolfo Guzmán company and the National Center for the Prevention of STIs HIV/AIDS, the group gave a concert at the Astral Theater (Calzada de Infanta No. 501, Centro Habana, Havana) on March 1, 2008. There they launched their first album, promoting the single Muchacha, and their guests included maestro Santiago Alfonso and his company, Niurka Reyes, Haila, Yolie, Gardi and Maikel Blanco.
The Gitano’s Vocal Group has performed at the National Theater of Cuba (Paseo and 39th Street, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana) and the Astral Theater (Calzada de Infanta No. 501, Centro Habana, Havana), among other venues in Cuba. The music of this distinguished Cuban vocal group has been featured in documentaries such as “On a Tightrope” and the television program “Where There Are Men, There Are No Ghosts.”
The group has joined the artistic brigades supporting hurricane victims. They are a vocal group with a charming image and stage presence, achieving a well-conceived performance in which they coherently combine their vocals and choreography, demonstrating a high level of professionalism.
