13.20.2 Erick Sánchez

Erick Sánchez, Cuban troubadour, had a musical inclination from a very young age. In high school and at rural schools, he sang songs by Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, and others, accompanied by a friend on guitar. Around this time, he began composing and singing his own songs. He learned the chords by watching his friends perform them.
She later studied Art Education, specializing in music. At that institution, she took classes in various subjects, including popular harmony, contemporary harmony, music history, solfeggio, counterpoint, and choral singing.
In 2000, during the Ibero-American Song Meeting, he gave a concert in the neighborhood called La Timba.
In June 2005, Erick Sánchez gave his first solo concert at the Che Guevara Hall of the Casa de las Américas (3rd and G Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). He performed both older songs and some of his latest compositions. His guests included Dayron Ortega, Pancho Amat’s guitarist; Alden Correa, percussionist; Michel Portela, a troubadour from Santa Clara; Laura Falcón, cellist with the National Symphony Orchestra; Adrián Berazaín; and Barbarito Torres, from the Buena Vista Social Club.
That same year, he released a demo consisting of 18 tracks; he started on guitar and added vocals and musicians to the songs.
His songs address various everyday themes, always based on his experiences, including love. They reflect his own perspective, from the perspective of personal events, shifting toward the social issues of his time. He has two approaches to his compositions: one more lyrical, influenced by the troubadour José Raúl García Marrero; the other, more sonero, embedded in social commentary.
Sánchez’s work is composed of songs that represent a variety of musical genres, including boleros, ballads, reggae, Renaissance songs, guajiras, and, above all, sones.
Her song, Casa de Cristal, was for a time the theme song for the radio program of the same name, hosted by Ana María Ramos.
Erick Sánchez has performed on countless trova stages throughout his career. He is considered one of the leading figures in the “A guitarra limpia” concerts organized by the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center.
