13.22.1 Yulien Oviedo Sánchez

Yulien Oviedo Sánchez, a prominent Cuban percussionist and singer, was born on November 29, 1982, in Havana. He was the son of Cuban musician Calixto Oviedo, who introduced him to music. He completed his musical training at the Manuel Saumell Conservatory (660 F Street, Vedado, Havana), specializing in percussion, and completed his studies at the National School of Art (120th Street between 9th and 13th Streets, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana).
When he was just a year and a half old, he made his debut playing percussion with Adalberto Álvarez’s orchestra. He also played with NG La Banda and participated in the recording of the CD Desde El Patio de mi casa. At eleven, Yulien recorded with Afro Cuban All Star, playing the timbale and quinto, and also recorded a track on the unforgettable Rubén González’s album.
He participated in flutist Maraca’s CD, Havana Calling; recorded a track on Rubén González’s album; and collaborated on the album Gracias Formell. Yulien Oviedo Sánchez has toured internationally since he was 8 years old. At eleven, he toured Japan with NG La Banda.
He appeared alongside his father on the Corporan program “Sábado Chiquito” in the Dominican Republic, where he shared the stage with important figures in that nation’s music. In 1995, he traveled to Italy, where he performed at the Bravo Bravísimo event. There, he was accompanied by the Italian TV Orchestra and placed fourth among the world’s child prodigies.
Later, he joined Charanga Habanera, a group where he established his mark as a percussionist and also served as one of the lead singers. Around this time, he participated in a European tour with his father, singer Luis Frank, and musicians from Buena Vista Social Club.
Yulien Oviedo Sánchez has been a member of other groups such as Aché Junior, Los Chicos de la Salsa, PG, and Química Perfecta. He has also left his mark on numerous albums, including Afro Cuban All Stars, Buena Vista Social Club, La recompensa, and Gracias Formell. He has also performed with artists such as Tata Güines, Angá, and Compay Segundo, among others.
Today, Yulien is working on his own project, Yulien Oviedo y su Onda Light. Los Exterminadores is his latest production. He also collaborates with prominent reggaeton artists, both Cuban and international.
