13.23.1 People D’Zona

Gente D’Zona, a prominent Cuban reggaeton group founded by Alexander Delgado. Its beginnings date back to 2000, when its director was trying to bring together several rap artists from Alamar, hence its name. Alexander, along with Michel (el Caro), began performing at parties and official venues in the Havana municipalities of Guanabacoa, Regla, and Alamar. They participated in international rap festivals and joined the Hermanos Saiz Association.

In 2002, Gente D’Zona launched their professional career with the Antonio María Romeu label. Around that time, they embarked on a national tour. Three years later, they joined the Cuban Rap Agency’s catalog; and that same year, Michel left the group, and Yosdany and Fernando Otero joined the group.

It currently consists of three members: Alexander Delgado, founder and director; Yosdany Carmenates (Jacob Forever), composer and singer; and Fernando Otero (Nando Pro), music producer and arranger. They are accompanied on stage by a live band.

Gente D’Zona appeared on David Calzado y su Charanga Habanera’s CD “El Rey de los Charangueros” in 2007, with the song “El Cañón.” At the end of June 2009, they embarked on an extensive tour of Europe, which included countries such as Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, England, and Finland.

In 2010, they toured the United States, performing in cities such as New York, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Miami. In 2011, they traveled to the United States again with El Chacal, this time performing several concerts. They then traveled to Europe for their summer tour.

Gente D’Zona achieved the popularity they enjoy today with their album “Lo Mejor que Suena Ahora Vol. II.” This album features songs like “Le gusta los artistas” (The Best That Sounds Now) and “Los animales” (The Animals), which have topped the charts in Cuba and abroad, such as those in Miami and Europe.

The best thing that sounds right now was a huge sales success in the United States and Europe, resulting in an international sensation.

Gente D’Zona tours at least twice a year in European countries. They have a huge following, mainly among young people, although they are acclaimed by the general public.

The music of this Cuban reggaeton group is characterized by a sensational sound and rhythmic elements of Afro-Cuban music. Their performances are charged with strong energy, based on sparkling choreography and lyrics.

Among the songs in their repertoire are “Pa’ la Gente de Mi Zona,” “Soñé,” “La Campana,” “La Muchachita,” “Tremenda pena,” “Qué daño,” “Bucanero,” and “Cocina.” They share pieces with other important Cuban musicians such as Yulien Oviedo and El Cata, to name a few.

Gente D’Zona is one of the most prominent reggaeton groups in Cuba and is also considered the most significant group in Cuban popular music in recent years.
