13.23 Outstanding Reggaeton groups in Cuban music in the 20th century (2000-2011).


Just as talented young performers of Reggaeton and Cubaton have emerged in Cuba, so too have popular groups that perform this type of music; these, in turn, enjoy great popularity among both national and international audiences. Several notable artists deserve mention, including Gente de Zona, Kola Loka, Acento Latino, and Mediterráneo.

Gente D’Zona is a Cuban reggaeton group founded by Alexander Delgado. In 2002, they began their professional career with the Antonio María Romeu label. Three years later, they joined the Cuban Rap Agency.

The group currently consists of three members; they appeared on the 2007 CD “El Rey de los Charangueros” by David Calzado y su Charanga Habanera, with the song “El Cañón.” At the end of June 2009, they embarked on an extensive tour of Europe.

In 2010, they toured the United States, performing in cities such as New York, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Miami. In 2011, they traveled to the United States again with El Chacal, this time performing several concerts.

Gente D’Zona achieved the popularity they enjoy today with their album, “Lo Mejor que Suena Ahora Vol. II.” The best that sounds now was a huge sales success in the United States and Europe, resulting in an international sensation. The music of this Cuban reggaeton group is characterized by a sensational sound and rhythmic elements of Afro-Cuban music.

It is one of the most prominent exponents of reggaeton in Cuba and is also considered the most significant group in Cuban popular music in recent years.

Kola Loka, a Cuban fusion group with a platform in reggaeton, was founded in 2001. They have achieved a good mix of rhythms based on reggaeton, achieving an excellent fusion with kisomba, calypso, and merengue. They also draw on numerous influences from son, guaracha, and cumbia. Their songs possess a fun quality with a dose of humor, reminiscent of vernacular theater.

They have performed on the most popular Cuban television programs, in addition to successful tours in Europe and the United States. They have collaborated with many artists and groups that enjoy great popularity in Cuba.

Acento Latino is a Cuban musical group whose repertoire has expanded throughout its career, encompassing genres such as salsa, ballads, bachata, merengue, electronic music, and hip-hop. This group is widely followed by Cuban youth and has had the opportunity to work alongside highly talented musicians and groups. It has graced the charts of many radio programs dedicated to Cuban music on several occasions.

In 2007, the Cuban label BIS Music released a record titled El Gremio, which featured the participation of the country’s best reggaeton groups and soloists.

Mediterranean’s light reggaeton has been very well received, as evidenced by his most recent album, Bien Pegao, which was released in 2010, preceding his album from the previous year, Tú Eres.

This group fuses their core genre, in this case reggaeton, with other genres, giving their work an authentic feel. As a group, they have toured Europe, especially Spain, earning a place among audiences in those regions.
