Tesis de Menta, a Cuban rock band founded by singer-songwriter Roberto Perdomo on November 3, 2003. Perdomo plays rhythm guitar and is also the band’s director and lead vocalist. Initially, the band also included Beatrix López (lead vocals and backing vocals), Iván Leyva (lead guitar and vocals), and Aldo Nosti (bass). The band’s lineup has undergone several changes since Leyva and Aldo left the band in 2004, followed by the incorporation of Osvaldo Vieites (who later left the group) on drums, and Virginia Peraza and Roberto Díaz (former members of the progressive rock band Anima Mundi) on keyboards.

The Tesis de Menta line-up was losing its balance with the comings and goings of musicians who stayed for short periods until it managed to stabilize for a good while with new members such as Jesús Sanabria (lead guitar), Sonia Rodríguez (keyboardist) Yulei Pérez (bass), Claudio Pairot (drums) and Mireya Torres (backing vocals) and later Miguel Garrido came in to cover for Sonia after her retirement from the band, as well as Eduardo Popy Ramos replaced Claudio Pairot.

Performing throughout the country, which increasingly attracted the attention of both the public and specialists, they managed to independently record their first phonographic material, featuring new sounds within contemporary Cuban music, with a creative capacity that allowed them to create their own signature. The demos “Antes de empezar,” “Contra la pared,” “De mí,” and “Sandra Partes” are examples that marked their distancing themselves from the more extreme tendencies of Cuban metal.

They have been invited to participate in numerous concerts, sharing the stage with prominent bands both in Cuba and other Latin American countries. These performances are complemented by their collaboration with the Canadian band The Slates, who were invited to Cuba by the Hermanos Saínz Association of Sancti Spíritus as part of Solidarity Rock, a cultural exchange project between the two countries. The band was also invited to participate in the CUBA VA project by guitarist Dagoberto Pedraja (current leader of Roca de Almendra) in a tribute to the renowned troubadour Noel Nicola and the ICAIC Sound Experimentation Group.

Tesis de Menta has already received various awards, including prizes from the programs Cuerda Viva and Sabarock, and several nominations at the “Lucas” Cuban video clip festival.

In 2005, the band won the Best New Rock Band award at the Cuerda Viva Festival and recorded their first official album under the EGREM label. In 2006, they began recording the CD “Mi Generación” (My Generation), produced by Elmer Ferrer and Juan Pablo Domínguez, with the collaboration of prominent musicians including Harold López Nussa, Amhed Mitchel, Yasek Manzano, and Ruy Adrián López Nussa. They achieved significant success with the video for the ballad “Lo que dejaste,” directed by Spaniard Alex Gil Roldan. The song “Incomunicados” was featured on the soundtrack of the film “Vedado,” an independent production by filmmakers Magdiel Aspillaga and Azori Soto, who also directed the video based on the same song. Additionally, the video for the song “Mi Generación” was nominated for the 2007 Lucas Awards. The video was directed by Pavel Giroud.

Their second album, “Fragmentos,” was recorded in 2008 with the Colibrí label and was produced by composer and keyboardist Esteban Puebla (Síntesis) and with the collaboration of Maykel Barzagas (father) and Maykel Barzagas (son), who were in charge of the recording, mixing, and mastering process of the CD.

In 2009, Tesis de Menta released their compilation album, Rock Vivo, during that year’s Cuerda Viva Festival. The CD features a beautifully crafted version of the song “Blanca Mujer,” a track previously included on their first demo and unfortunately mistakenly credited to the band. It’s an original by Puerto Rican composer and performer Draco Rosa. However, the band’s director himself made it clear at the time that this error was in no way the group’s fault.

The group is affiliated with the Hermanos Saínz Association (AHS) and is listed in the Cuban Rock Agency’s catalog.

The sharpness and sensitivity of the lyrics of Tesis de Menta, as well as the complexity of its original musical arrangements, have made it one of the flagship bands of Cuban rock with songs as innovative and committed as “Hoy aquí”, “El Hombre X” and “Los nuevos Días”, to name just a few examples.

Currently the band is made up of: Roberto Perdomo (lead vocals, vocals and rhythm guitar), Beatrix López (lead vocals, vocals and miscellaneous), Jesús Sanabria (lead guitar and vocals), Mireya Torres (vocals), Daryl Vaillant (bass), Daniel Zaldívar (drums) and Jany Cruz (piano and keyboards).

The undeniable quality of Tesis de Menta and a sound that has placed them within what is internationally known as adult-oriented rock (AOR) have placed the group in a significant place in Cuban culture.
