13.27 Eduardo Díaz Rodríguez. Conductor of concert music orchestras in Cuban Music in the 20th Century (2000-2011).

Eduardo Díaz Rodríguez, a distinguished Cuban musician and professor, is a leading exponent of orchestral conducting in Cuba. He was an uncontrollable music lover from a young age. He began studying piano and enrolled in the Matanzas Professional Music School in 1999, graduating five years later with a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting.
Speaking briefly about his achievements and experiences, we can trace his glory from his very beginnings in 1999 to 2004, when he founded the Matanzas Youth Choir and directed the Juan Marinello Higher Pedagogical Institute choir, winning several awards at provincial and national FEU festivals. During this time, he was also guest director of the Matanzas Chamber Choir.
In 2005 he began his Bachelor’s degree in Orchestral Conducting at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (Calle 120 No. 1110 e/ 9na y 13. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana) under the tutelage of Professor Enrique Pérez Mesa, a stage that he successfully completed in 2009. A year later he completed his master’s degree in music, also at ISA (Calle 120 No. 1110 e/ 9na y 13. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana).
That same year, Eduardo Díaz was invited to participate in the Young Musicians Festival in Matanzas, with the Conservatory Symphony Orchestra of that city, at the Sauto Theater. Two years later, he began working with the National Lyric Theater of Cuba.
Between 2004 and 2008, he served as a professor at institutions such as the National School of Music (ENA), the Matanzas Professional School of Music, and the Teaching Unit of the National Lyric Theater. During this time, he taught classes in choral conducting, choral arrangement, score reading, music appreciation, music history, and chamber music.
In 2009, Eduardo Díaz became a professor of orchestral conducting at the ISA Music School (1110 120th Street between 9th and 13th Streets, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana). He currently teaches orchestral conducting at the Havana Institute of Art. He is also the musical and orchestral director of the National Lyric Theater of Cuba (Paseo and 39th Streets, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). He also serves as guest conductor of the “Nuestro Tiempo” Chamber Orchestra, which includes members of the renowned National Symphony Orchestra.
He had the opportunity to direct the zarzuela Amalia Batista, a performance commemorating the anniversary of the birth of maestro Rodrigo Prats. This performance took place at the Gran Teatro de La Habana (Paseo Martí No. 458, Old Havana, Havana). In 2010, he was the orchestra conductor and guest of Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso at the 22nd Havana International Ballet Festival.
Eduardo Díaz has conducted operas such as P. Mascagni’s Cavallería Rusticana, Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), and Gonzalo Roig’s Cuban zarzuela Cecilia Valdés, leading the orchestras of the Gran Teatro de La Habana and the Nuestro Tiempo chamber orchestra.
He has served as guest conductor with the Matanzas, Santa Clara, and Santiago de Cuba Symphony Orchestras, addressing diverse programs within the symphonic and operatic repertoire. He has worked with soloists such as María Eugenia Barrios (soprano), Bárbara Llanes (soprano), Milagros de los Ángeles (soprano), Alain Perara (cello), Yanay Fernández (horn), and Mayte Aboy (piano), among others.
During 2011, he continued his training thanks to the Diploma Course in Hispanic Musical Heritage with the University of Valladolid, Spain, and a Master’s Degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of San Jerónimo in Havana.
