13.4.3 Amadeo Roldán String Quartet

The Amadeo Roldán String Quartet of the Cuban National Philharmonic was founded in 2002 and is now one of Cuba’s leading chamber ensembles.
The original idea originated with renowned Cuban musician and composer Leo Brouwer. This initiative blossomed, aiming to promote chamber music throughout the island. The idea materialized thanks to several of his most talented alumni from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (1110 Calle 120 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana). Today, the quartet is comprised of Leonardo Pérez (first violin); William Roblejo (second violin); Anolan González (viola); and Lester Monier (cello).
In addition to their own compositions, they have a repertoire that encompasses numerous styles and eras, including Latin Jazz and fusion music. Their work has appeared on numerous national and international recordings. Their talent has led them to premiere works by important composers.
The Amadeo Roldán String Quartet has dazzled audiences in many of Cuba’s major theaters and has appeared at events and festivals throughout Latin America and the Old Continent. In May 2011, they gave a luxurious concert in the Gonzalo Roig Hall of the National Lyric Theater (Zulueta No. 253 between Ánimas and Neptuno, Old Havana, Havana), where they performed a piece dedicated by Maestro Brouwer specifically to the group.
