13.6.1 Rodrigo Prats National Lyrical Singing Competition

The Rodrigo Prats National Lyric Singing Competition, held in the province of Holguín, is the highest competitive event of its kind in Cuba. This Cuban musical event offers awards such as the Grand Prize and various recognitions to female and male voices.

The contest is a way to honor maestro Rodrigo Prats, author of celebrated Cuban songs such as “Una rosa de Francia” and “Miedo al desengaño” (A Rose from France) and “Miedo al desengaño” (Fear of Disappointment), and zarzuelas such as “María Belén Chacón,” “La Habana que vuelve,” “Soledad” (Solitude), and “Amalia Batista.”

It also contributes to safeguarding that national expression, which is lyrical singing, as well as to the dissemination of this music and to introducing new figures of it.

Also in the Rodrigo Prats National Lyric Singing Competition, a prize is awarded to the pianists who accompany the singers who participate, being the only national competition that grants this award.
