13.7.1 Havana Polyphonic Choir


The Havana Polyphonic Choir is a Cuban vocal group founded in 1999 by its director, Carmen Collado López. Its debut took place with a concert on April 14, 2000.

This vocal group is made up of fourteen singers, both students and graduates of various music conservatories and the Higher Institute of Art (Calle 120 No. 1110 e/ 9na y 13. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana).

He has a vast repertoire, made up of numerous works that range from polyphonic music belonging to the 16th century to contemporary choral music, including Cuban music.

Among the works she has performed and that make up the repertoire of the Havana Polyphonic Choir are: Psalms of the Americas by José María Vitier; Yugo y Estrella by Roberto Valera; and Ode to Queen Anne by G.F. Handel.

Since its founding, the Havana Polyphonic Choir has performed in various venues across the country, including major halls and theaters. It has given concerts alongside prominent Cuban groups such as the Matanzas Symphony Orchestra and the Cuban National Orchestra. It has also participated in various choral music events held in Cuba and abroad, such as the Esteban Salas Early Music Festival.

Among the festivals the group has attended are the Esteban Salas Early Music Festival, the Havana Contemporary Music Festival, the Chamber Music Festival, and the Corhabana Festival, among others.

Her first album, “Aire Nocturno,” was released on the Unicornio label and features music by Beatriz Corona. This album won the Choral Music Award at the 2002 Cubadisco International Festival.

In 2008, the Havana Polyphonic Choir performed in a concert that was part of the meeting of the College of Latin American Art Music Composers, held in Havana. There, they shared the stage with several Cuban groups, such as the Camerata Romeu and the Música Eterna Chamber Orchestra.

That same year, they performed for two weeks in several French cities as part of the Canta Cuba program, sponsored by the University of Paris (VIII). They gave more than a dozen concerts and performed with eleven French vocal groups. They performed some fifty works by Cuban and Latin American composers.

To celebrate its 9th anniversary, it gave a concert at the Minor Basilica of the Convent of San Francisco de Asís (Offices between Amargura and Churruca, Old Havana, Havana), in which it performed works by Electo Silva, Maurice Duruflé and Francis Poulenc, as well as by Cubans Beatriz Corona, Ignacio Piñeiro, Roberto Valera, Guido López Gavilán and Calixto Álvarez.

In 2010, the Havana Polyphonic Choir performed for the second time in the municipality of Artemisa in celebration of National Culture Day. The following year, in April 2011, it performed at the Gonzalo Roig Hall (Zulueta No. 253, between Ánimas and Neptuno, Old Havana, Havana City), where the program included Spanish and French Renaissance choral works and arias from G. Bizet’s opera Carmen.
