13.7 Choral Groups of Cuban Music in the 21st Century (2000-2011).

In Cuba, choral music boasts a high level of quality, which is why it is highly respected and has a demonstrable international reputation. At this stage, choral groups of various types emerge within the framework of Cuban music.

The Havana Polyphonic Choir is a Cuban vocal group founded in 1999 by its director, Carmen Collado López. Its debut took place with a concert on April 14, 2000.

She has a vast repertoire, comprised of numerous works ranging from 16th-century polyphonic music to contemporary choral music, including Cuban music. Among the works she has performed and that make up the repertoire of the Havana Polyphonic Choir are: Psalms of the Americas by José María Vitier; Yugo y Estrella by Roberto Valera; and Ode to Queen Anne by G.F. Handel.

The Camerata Vocal Música Áurea, a Cuban choral group, was founded on February 9, 2002, by Delvis Sánchez Suárez, who has served as its director since its founding. Its repertoire includes choral music from a variety of musical styles, from the Renaissance with Spanish, French, English, and Italian Renaissance polyphony, to German lied, and even modernity. It also includes works by Cuban composers. Since its inception, it has performed on numerous stages and at national events and festivals.

Ensemble Vocal Luna is a female choral group founded on September 1, 2002, by Sonia Silvia McCormack Bequer. Its repertoire is highly varied, including works by numerous composers and musical styles and genres. Since its inception, it has participated in various Cuban music festivals. This choral group’s work includes five canturías (singing songs), composed by children and adolescents and directed by the members of Vocal Luna.

The Camerata Vocale Sine Nomine is a Cuban choral group founded in 2003. It is currently conducted by Leonor Suárez. Its debut took place during the 2nd Esteban Salas International Early Music Festival on January 11, 2004. The group is made up of 12 members.

It is a very unique vocal group, as it consists entirely of male members, who not only perform the bass and tenor registers, but also those currently associated with female voices. It is a male choir that uses the soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices. Therefore, it is unique in its class within the realm of contemporary choral music in Cuba. Its repertoire is extensive, bringing together pieces composed from the 15th century in Europe to the 19th century.

The Children’s Songs of the Luna Vocal Ensemble emerged with the intention of introducing children not previously associated with art schools to music. The Lunitas Song Group was the group that initiated this project, founded in September 2007 by Sandra Santos González, who serves as its director. The five current groups have performed in various venues for children and in major concert halls.

The National Children’s Choir, created by maestro Digna Guerra, has received support from other professionals in the implementation of this project, including Delfina Acay, Yaíma Fariñas, Isis Castillo, Greta Gomis, and Bismarck Estupiñán. It emerged from the Songs of the Cuban National Choir, made up of hundreds of children who also make up the Children’s Choir and the Youth Choir.

It is composed of a selective group of children, ranging in age from six to fourteen. From the age of fourteen, they join the youth choir. In this group, boys’ voices are carefully trained, as this is a difficult stage for the voice. The repertoire performed by this choir includes numerous Latin American and Cuban works, as well as the most representative repertoire of world music.
