5.6 Leonor López. First Cuban actress, 18th century


Leonor López was an illustrious Cuban actress who lived in Cuba in the 18th century.

Around 1773, he performed and achieved great success in Havana’s first theater-style venue, the so-called Casa de Comedias. This stage was located in the famous Callejón de Jústiz.

Leonor later traveled abroad to Mexico and Lima, where she distinguished herself and excelled for her talent in the dramatic arts. She also gained notoriety as a poet, thanks to her brilliant improvisations on stage.

Another virtue of this Cuban artist was her extraordinary memory, since, according to documents from the period, she could recite the complete comedies of important playwrights such as Lope de Vega and Calderón de la Barca.

Leonor López is the first actress of whom we have news today, which is why she is considered the first Cuban actress, that is, she is the first female representative of Cuban theater.
