5.10 Relevant authors of Cuban theater of the 18th century.

Within the Cuban theater scene of the 18th century, two authors stood out whose names have managed to remain throughout the historical development of Cuban theater.

The first of them, José Sotomayor, was the author of the interlude El poeta, which premiered in 1723. This work was written in Havana and is considered the first work written by a Cuban.

On the other hand, we can mention the poet José Surí, who premiered a comedy of his own in 1735 in Santa Clara, in the Plaza de Armas, during the festivities for the coronation of Infante Carlos as King of Naples. It is said that this event was sponsored by the City Council. Furthermore, some amateurs participated in it, and it was a type of spectacle performed for the first time in Cuba.

Around 1947, he held another premiere in Santa Clara and wrote texts for performances. He also served as director of performances held during the celebrations in praise of Ferdinand VI. Surí also premiered an interlude later in 1760.

Unfortunately, no documents have been found to date that refer to any of these plays.
