11.11.5 Emilia Díaz Chávez

Emilia Díaz Chávez, a Cuban choir director, was born on October 12, 1951, in San Luís, Santiago de Cuba. She completed her musical studies at the National School of Arts, where she graduated with a degree in choral conducting in 1978. She earned a degree in music education from the José Martí Higher Pedagogical Institute in Camagüey, where she currently resides.
Since 1980, she has served as director of the Camagüey Choir. With this choral group, she has participated in both national and international festivals. She has also performed in concert halls located in several Cuban provinces. In 1981, at the Siboney Studios in Santiago de Cuba, she recorded the choir’s first LP.
Along with his choir, he participated in the artistic evening for the inauguration of the Cayo Cruz causeway. In 2001, he brought his music to the opening gala of the World Youth Baseball Championship held in Camagüey. He has also conducted other groups such as the choirs of Bayamo, Holguín, and the Madrigalista choir of Santiago de Cuba, as well as the Camagüey Band and Symphony Orchestra.
She has worked as an educator, teaching choral singing at the Luis Casas Romero and José White vocational arts schools for several years.
In 1994, she founded the vocal group Desandann as an offshoot of the choir. With the group, she has represented Cuba and brought Cuban choral music to numerous nations, including Haiti, Canada, France, Italy, the Bahamas, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the United States. In the United States, she performed in various cities: Washington, D.C., New York, Platts Burgh; Columbus, Cleveland, Burlington, New Rockeller, Boston, Texas, and Miami. She also performed with the group at the Harbourfront World Festival in Toronto, Canada.
In January 1998, she advised and directed the papal choir for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Camagüey. In 1999, she recorded the first CD for the group Desandann, which she also co-produced. Along with this, she has received four Princes’ Awards from Camagüey’s television channel.
In April 2004, he participated with Desandann in the opening ceremony of the second Cuban Sports Olympics in the city of Camagüey. He has also appeared on local and national radio and television programs.
Emilia Díaz is vice president of the provincial committee of UNEAC. She has served as president of juries for music and radio events on countless occasions. She is the president of the cultural exchange between Camagüey and Haiti, known as Kamahaití.
Currently, he is part of a team of musical advisors for Camagüey TV,
She is the leading representative of the province’s singing movement. She teaches singing classes to actors and actresses from the Camagüey Dramatic Ensemble for the production of musical works.
