12.8 Concert Music in Cuban Music in the 20th Century (1980-1999)

During this period of concert music in Cuban Music in the 20th Century (1980-1999), the Havana String Quartet, a Cuban chamber group, was founded in 1980 by the inventiveness of Leo Brouwer, with the purpose of performing the Latin American repertoire for that format.

This chamber group has performed on stages throughout Cuba and at national and international festivals within the sphere of Cuban music.

The Havana String Quartet displays a varied and broad repertoire made up of works by great composers such as Haydn, Mozart, Dvorak, Ravel, Toon de Leeuw, I. Lang, Webern, Barce, Villa-Rojo or T. Marco, Revueltas, Manuel Enríquez or Garrido-Leca, Ginastera and Villa-Lobos, and others.

They have shared stages and experiences with prominent musical figures and groups such as Leo Brouwer, Elliot Fisk, Pepe Romero, Javier Perianes, and Buena Vista Social Club. Throughout their career, the Havana String Quartet has garnered several awards, including the Award for Interpretive Mastery.

The Promúsica Duo is another exponent of concert music; it consists of pianist Maria Victoria del Collado and violinist Alfredo Muñoz, who were both members of the renowned White Trio.

Their debut as a chamber duo took place in 1981. The fundamental purpose of this group is to disseminate the most important works of the universal repertoire in Cuba and to promote Cuban and Latin American music abroad. Their repertoire is characterized by its vast scope, based on works written for this format. It encompasses more than 150 works spanning all musical styles and eras.

They have also taken their music to various countries, including Argentina, Nicaragua, Peru, the Bahamas, Guadeloupe, Portugal, Russia, France, and the Netherlands. The group is known for its dedication and rigorous musical performance, and is considered by critics to be a leading institution in Cuban chamber music.

During this period, the Camerata Romeu was also established in 1993, officially debuting in September 1994. Under the baton of Maestro Zenaida Castro Romeu, the group is composed exclusively of women, becoming the first of its kind in Cuban musical history. Its image is a fitting tribute to the beauty of Cuban women.

He has performed in countries such as the United States, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Sweden, Costa Rica, Norway, France, and many of the world’s most prestigious venues. Another of his signature elements on stage is the absence of sheet music, demonstrating that they have mastered the music and irrefutable evidence of professional rigor.

The Música Eterna Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1995 by maestro Guido López-Gavilán, was created to bring together students from musical institutions with the goal of forming a group that would contribute to their artistic development. López-Gavilán describes this as a beautiful experiment.

Música Eterna is composed of a selection of talented students and graduates, instrumentalists from the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (1110 Calle 120 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), who possess a high level of technical proficiency. This group’s repertoire is extensive, featuring works from different countries, eras, and musical styles.

Since its formation within the Cuban music scene, thousands of people have witnessed its brilliant performances. These performances are a display of dynamism, beauty, and universally recognized music. An invaluable and diverse group of Cuban musicians continues the work of expanding the dimension and reach of this type of music.

Sonatas Habaneras, a Cuban guitar ensemble, was founded in 1995 by maestro Jesús Ortega. It is the youngest guitar orchestra in Cuba and has its permanent home at the Amadeo Roldán Theater (Calzada y D, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana). Today, this group demonstrates the value and relevance of Cuban guitar playing, boasting a varied program that combines classic and popular music.

In 2009, the Miguelito Cuní Provincial Music Institute, in coordination with the Directorate of Culture, awarded Jesús Ortega and Sonatas Habaneras recognition as a jewel of Cuban culture.

The Ondina Duo, founded in 1997, has since been comprised of two distinguished Cuban instrumentalists, Niurka González on flute and María del Henar Navarro on piano. Their repertoire at each performance includes pieces from all musical styles and by composers of diverse nationalities.

Throughout its history, it has performed in major concert halls throughout the Cuban archipelago. It has participated in chamber music events within the Cuban music scene; it has also left its mark on other discographies, such as the CD Música de Cámara by Maestro Jorge López Marin and the CD Homo Ludens by Maestro Leo Brouwer.

Solistas de La Habana is a chamber music orchestra founded in 1998 by Maestro Iván Valiente, who serves as its director; and María Elena Mendiola is the principal conductor. Among its director’s goals is the preservation of the multi-format tradition; hence, one of the group’s defining characteristics, in addition to its excellent chamber work, is that it is divided into soloists, duos, trios, and quartets for the performance of other works.

Another of the orchestra’s goals is to premiere and revive works that are little-known or never heard in Cuba, regardless of the style, period, or even popular music.

The Trovarroco Trio is a Cuban group founded in 1999 in Villa Clara by concert guitarist Rachid López. It is a group that cultivates concert music. Its repertoire includes works from the 15th and 16th centuries, as well as Latin American and Cuban pieces, which are adapted to concert music through arrangements.

This Cuban trio’s debut album, Sueño de un despertar (Dream of an Awakening), was conceived in 2000 under the BIS MUSIC label, whose catalog includes exclusive talent. They received three nominations at the 2001 Cubadisco International Fair for this album.
