12.8.4 Eternal Music Chamber Orchestra

The Música Eterna Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1995 by Maestro Guido López-Gavilán, who has served as its director since its founding.
The idea behind its creation was to bring together students from musical institutions to form a group, thereby contributing to their artistic development. López-Gavilán says it was a wonderful experiment.
Música Eterna is made up of a selection of talented students and graduates of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (Calle 120 No. 1110 e/ 9na y 13. Cubanacán. Playa. Havana), who possess a high technical level.
This group’s repertoire is extensive, featuring works from different countries, eras, and musical styles, from Baroque to the most contemporary compositions. It includes a variety of highly diverse melodies, both academic and popular, as well as versions of Cuban and Latin American songs. Among its works are Handel’s Messiah; concertos in F minor, D minor, and for two pianos and strings in C minor by Johann Sebastian Bach; Guido’s Ritmarc; and Variations on the Cumbanchero, inspired by the song of the same name by Puerto Rican musician Rafael Hernández. It also includes works by composers such as Astor Piazzolla (Argentine); José Moncayo (Mexican); and George Gershwin (American).
To celebrate its 15th anniversary, Música Eterna embarked on a successful national tour, performing fifteen shows. It began on June 19, 2010, at the Minor Basilica of the Convent of San Francisco de Asís (Offices between Amargura and Churruca, Old Havana, Havana), in the Historic Center of Havana. The performances featured pianist Aldo López-Gavilán Junco, who performed several of his own pieces as a guest soloist. On June 22, they performed in the province of Guantámano, their first city to visit.
They have performed at various national venues, including the Benito Granda Gallery in the city of Jiguaní and the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial Museum in Bayamo, Granma; the Dolores Hall (Reloj and Aguilera streets, Santiago de Cuba) in Santiago de Cuba; the Trinidad Local History Museum; and other major venues in Cuban cities.
Since its inception in the Cuban music scene, thousands of people have witnessed its brilliant performances, in which its members perform as soloists. These performances are a display of dynamism, beauty, and universally good music.
They have shared the stage with leading figures in Cuban music, such as the renowned singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, with whom they perform the music of John Lennon; Frank Fernández (pianist); Bárbara Llanes (soprano); Stefano Scodanibbio (Italian double bassist); Cristoph Angerer (Austrian violist); Richard Luby and Erik Grossmann (American violinists); Tanya Prochaska (Canadian cellist). They have also shared the stage with young talents such as Yasek Manzano, pianists Harold López-Nussa, and Ilmar and Aldo López-Gavilán Junco; and the choral groups Schola Cantorum Coralina, Orfeón Santiago, and the Coro Nacional.
The CD Barroco Trópico won the Cubadisco Award in the Chamber Music category at the 2001 fair. The flautist Niurka González performed as a guest soloist.
From Cuba, Música Eterna is another album produced under the renowned EGREM label. It features anthological songs from popular music in versions for strings, piano, and percussion.
