12.8.6 Ondine Duo

The Ondina Duo, founded in 1997, has since been comprised of two prominent Cuban instrumentalists: Niurka González on the flute and María del Henar Navarro on the piano. The duo’s name pays homage to Ondina, an important Cuban flutist.
This duo’s debut album, recorded in 2004, features works from the universal repertoire written for flute. It was then released, titled “Flauta virtuosa.” That same year, they won the CUBADISCO Award (2004) for best debut album.
In August 2008, they performed in concert at the Basilica Menor de San Francisco de Asís (Oficios e/ Amargura y Churruca, La Habana Vieja, Havana), where they played a repertoire consisting of works by relevant international composers such as the Sonata for flute and piano in G minor, BWV 1020, by Johann Sebastian Bach; Fantasia, Nocturne and Allegro Scherzando, by Phillip Gaubert; Ballad, by A. Périlhou; and Andante Pastoral and Scherzettino, by P. Taffanel; among others. The following month the duo performed at the Caturla hall of the Amadeo Roldán Theater (Calzada y D, Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana).
The Ondina Duo’s repertoire at each of its performances includes pieces from all musical styles and by composers of diverse nationalities, including some works written especially for the Duo.
Throughout its history, the Ondina Duo has performed in major concert halls throughout the Cuban archipelago. They have participated in chamber music events within the Cuban music scene; they have also left their mark on other discographies, such as the CD Música de Cámara by Maestro Jorge López Marin and the CD Homo Ludens by Maestro Leo Brouwer.
