12.13.4 Beatriz Corona Rodríguez

Beatriz Corona Rodríguez, Cuban composer, choir director, arranger, and music producer, was born on June 22, 1962, in Havana. She began her musical studies at the Alejandro García Caturla Conservatory (1110 120th Street between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), specializing in piano. She later enrolled at the National School of Music (120th Street between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), where she studied choral conducting as a disciple of Alina Orraca. She completed her training in the same specialty at the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory (Rastro No. 1 and Espada, Centro Habana, Havana) with Professor Teresa Pentón.
In 1979, she participated in the 8th Festival of Youth Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, Austria, as a member of the Chamber Choir of the National School of Arts (120th Street between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), directed by Alina Orraca. At this competition, they won second prize in the Choir category.
As a professional, Beatriz Corona directed the Cienfuegos Professional Choir for a year, in addition to working as a teacher at several conservatories in Havana and Camagüey. She was also a music advisor to the National Presidency of the Cuban Pioneers Organization and has taught at the National School of Music (120th Street between 9th and 13th Streets, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana).
In 1992, he undertook a working tour of various cities in Sweden; three years later, in 1995, he offered workshops on choral music and his work in Argentina. Also around this time, he gave classes and workshops on choral arrangement in Venezuela.
In 2002, his album, Aire Nocturno, was nominated for a Cubadisco Award in the Recording, Music Production, and Choral Music categories, winning the latter. Aire Nocturno is a selection of his choral works of excellent artistic and professional quality, performed by Vocal Leo and the Havana Polyphonic Choir.
Beatriz Corona is one of the most important and prolific contemporary Cuban composers of choral music, a definition that allows us to compile her catalogue of choral works as well as her arrangements for voices in various formats.
His catalog consists of approximately 200 choral works in various formats, including orchestral music, chamber music, and religious works. He also composed incidental music for the films Amor Vertical and Sabor Latino.
He has set to music the poetic works of José Martí, Nicolás Guillén, Mario Benedetti, Pablo Neruda, Adolfo Martí, César Vallejo, Dora Alonso and Dulce María Loynaz, among others.
Among the awards Beatriz Corona Rodríguez has received throughout her artistic career are prizes from various composition competitions, such as La Edad de Oro (The Golden Age), the National Music Competition of the Directorate of Artistic Education, the Esteban Salas Choral Composition Competition, and the National Competition of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC). She has twice received the Abril Prize.
