Miguel Núñez Hernández, a distinguished Cuban pianist, composer, arranger, and conductor, was born on November 27, 1964, in Havana. At 17 years old, he began his musical studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (1110 Calle 120 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), where he specialized in piano.
Without neglecting his studies, he began to excel in the interpretation of jazz, Cuban popular music, and classical music, the latter occupying an important place in his development as an artist. He participated in contemporary music festivals, piano, choir, and other venues. His music is informed by different formats and a fusion of musical genres, resulting in a truly enriching result.
Miguel Núñez’s great talent has led him to collaborate on recordings and concerts with national and international artists such as Leo Brouwer, Fito Páez, Milton Nacimento, Ricardo Arjona, Víctor Manuel, Luis Represas, Ana Belén, Mercedes Sosa, Ketama, Carlos Varela, Omara Portuondo, Richard Egües, the Yoruba Andabo group, César López, Liuba María Hevia, Santiago Feliú, Polito Ibáñez, David Torrens, Chucho Valdés, Joaquín Sabina, among others; not only performing but also as an arranger, producer and director.
Pablo Milanés has been a key player in Miguel’s artistic development. He has been a member of his musical group since 1988 as a backing vocalist, arranger, pianist, and musical director. He has also simultaneously overseen the musical production of several of the singer-songwriter’s albums.
In 1998, Miguel Núñez Hernández, in parallel with his work with Pablo, founded the group Miguel’s Trio, which also includes Luis Ángel Sánchez on bass and Osmany Sánchez. With this trio, he created the CD Azul, under the Unicornio label, the music for the ballet Tocororo, and various film soundtracks, such as the one for the film Páginas del diario de Mauricio, by director Manuel Pérez.
