12.19.7 Xiomara Laugart.


Xiomara Laugart, a prominent Cuban singer, was born on June 8, 1960, in the eastern province of Guantánamo. She is considered one of the leading voices of Cuban Trova and Feeling. She completed her musical studies at the Ignacio Cervantes School of Professional Development. She had her first international appearance in 1979 at the Berlin Political Song Festival.

In 1980, she participated in the Adolfo Guzmán Cuban Music Competition, where she placed third. That same year, she traveled to Nicaragua with the Pinos Nuevos Group from the Isle of Youth. A year later, she participated again as a guest at the Berlin Political Song Festival; and also in 1981, she won third prize in the Sochi Political Song Interpretation Competition in the Soviet Union.

Xiomara Laugart was a member of the Aconcagua and Talla Extra (XL) groups and also a member of the Isla de la Juventud Puppet Theater group. In 1982, she performed at the Café Concert in Mexico and participated in the Festival for Non-Intervention in Central America and Disarmament, held in the Netherlands and Belgium. That same year, she traveled to France.

In 1984 he toured several Latin American countries, including Honduras and Costa Rica.

Xiomara Laugart officially began her artistic career in 1985, supported by renowned artists such as Raúl Torres, Silvio Rodríguez, and Pablo Milanés. She participated in the 5th Activo de la Nueva Trova Festival, the 6th Cumbre, and Carifesta.

La Negra, as she was also known to those close to her, has over fifteen albums and numerous collaborations. She participated in the American film Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights. She was also part of the German-Cuban co-production A Paradise Under the Stars.

In 1992, Xiomara Laugart returned to Mexico and performed at the La Giraldilla restaurant. Her monthly galas at the legendary Zinc Bar in New York have been hailed as legendary by the press and the public.
