12.19.9 Augusto Enriquez Hernandez


Augusto Enríquez Hernández, Cuban singer and composer, was born on August 12, 1961, in Havana. He began his artistic career in the group Moncada, performing at the University of Havana (University Avenue and Vedado neighborhood, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana), where he performed as a vocalist and remained with the group for several years.

He later decided to pursue a solo career, quickly becoming nationally and internationally known. Augusto Enríquez has achieved numerous successes throughout his career, participating in festivals and concerts in various countries.

In 1989, 1990, and 1991, he performed at the Sanremo International Festival; in 1991, he performed at the Santa Laura Stadium in Santiago, Chile. The following year, Augusto toured London, Zurich, Bern, Basel, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan, Turin, and Rome, alongside Phil Manzanera, guitarist of the English group Roxy Music.

In 1995, he performed with Jovanotti on the steps of the University of Havana (Avenida Universidad and G. Vedado, Plaza de la Revolución, Havana); that same year, he gave the Help Rwanda Concert with Paul John, Miriam Makeba, and Boys 2 Men. In 1998, he served as producer, artistic director, and singer for the programs broadcast from Havana on RAI 2, commemorating the visit to Cuba of Pope John Paul II. He also performed at the Festival of the Living Treasures in 1999.

To her credit as an artist, she performed at Music Bridge in 1999, the first gathering of American and Cuban artists for a week in Havana for music creation workshops.

In 2000, he performed at Convocation Hall in Toronto and at the Sanremo Festival. A year later, he gave a concert at Canada’s Wonderland in Toronto. In 2002, he gave a concert with Jovanotti at the Stadium Flaminio in Italy. Around this time, he was invited by Italian tenor Luciano Pavarotti to participate in the show Pavarotti and Friends. On this occasion, at the Palazzo di Novi Sad in Modena, he sang a duet with Luciano Pavarotti on the legendary piece “Chitarra romana” and shared the stage with Sting, Andrea Bocelli, and James Brown.

In 2004, Augusto opened the summer concerts at Rome’s New Auditorium. In 2010, he chaired the Benny Moré Popular Music Festival; in November, he toured the province of Cienfuegos.

Along with Paddy Maloney, Todd Smallwood, and Mick Fletwood, he created the song titled “One World.” He also produced the music for the Mexican soap opera “Crossroads,” broadcast on Televisa.

Augusto Enríquez’s discography includes ten CDs. His album Carambola (2000) recreates Cuban music from the 1940s and 1950s, produced for the Cuban Jazz Band format. This production featured collaborations with Demetrio Muñiz, Joan Manuel Serrat, Gianni Miná, and Emilio de Alessandro.

He founded his orchestra called Augusto Enríquez and his Mambo Band, with which he has performed in numerous venues.

He has sung alongside great international music figures such as Chucho Valdés and Irakere, Amaury Pérez, Juan Formell and Los Van Van, Issac Delgado, Edesio Alejandro, Omara Portuondo, Elena Burke, Adalberto Álvarez, Sarah González, Ernán López Nussa, Demetrio Muñiz, Joan Manuel Serrat, Lou Reed, Zucchero, Jovanotti, Manuel Mijares, Guadalupe Pineda, Mónica Naranjo, and others.

She has also participated in European television programs, including those on Italy’s RAI, such as Pronto Raffaella and Carramba che Fortuna, both with Rafaela Carrá, among others.

His works as a composer include: Despite the People (I Love You); Grow in Your Dreams; When I Grow Up; Tell Me No; Time Is What Sums Up; Fabio, I Come to You; Rain of Hearts; My Song Rises; Because You Are Not Here; Alone; Only for Me; We Are Two; and Truths.

Among the awards he has collected throughout his career, we can mention the 2004 Cubadisco Award for his CD La bolita.
