12.19.16 Raúl Paz

Raúl Paz, a prominent Cuban singer and composer, was born in 1969 in the municipality of San Luis, Pinar del Río province. He learned to sing by listening to traditional Cuban music and began writing his first songs when he was 10 years old.

She completed her advanced singing studies at the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) (1110 Calle 120 between 9th and 13th, Cubanacán, Playa, Havana), between 1986 and 1993. In addition to singing, she studied various wind instruments, including the violin. She also learned music theory and counterpoint.

Raúl Paz left Cuba in the mid-1990s, first heading to South America and finally ending up in France. There he obtained a scholarship to continue his higher education at the Schola Cantorum in Paris, where he remained until 1997. By then, he was making a living playing in clubs where he was spotted by Ralph Mercado, founder of the RMM record label. Thanks to him, he recorded his first album, Cuba Libre, in Gloria Estefan’s studio in Miami. It was a resounding success, selling nearly 100,000 copies, and it served as a springboard to winning the “Best New Male Artist” award. In 1999, he received the ACE Award from the American Press for the most promising male artist.

After releasing the albums Contigo and Blanco y Negro, in 2000 she returned to Paris where she signed with Patrick Zelnik’s label Naïve and recorded her album Mulata in 2003, which sold 60,000 copies; this was followed by Revolución (2005), En Casa (2006), En Vivo (2007) and her most recent production Havanization (2010).

Raúl Paz is known as the French Cuban who revolutionized 21st-century Cuban music. He is one of the most prominent figures in technopop, rock, trova, pop, and fusion music. His musical style ranges from the youthful troubadour style of singer-songwriters like Carlos Varela to the singing style of Luisito Aguilé and some salsa artists. He is a musician who knows how to transform Cuban identity into something, let’s say, more universal. He is one of the most authentic representatives of international world music.

He has worked with musical theater director Alfredo Arias (Mambo Místico) and orchestra conductor Antoni Parera (La Gran Vía). He wrote the music for the film La vie d’un autre (The Life of an Other). He has also composed songs for Rosario Flores (“El beso”) and for English composer Murray Head Little One (“Carmen París 25 años”). He currently produces music and arranges for Bárbara Luna of Argentina; Angus of England; and Víctor Lazlo of France.

Raúl Paz is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador. He received the title of Distinguished Visitor from the Hermanos Saíz University in Pinar del Río for his contribution to the aesthetic education of youth.
