12.20.8 The Elite

La Élite, a Cuban popular music orchestra, founded by singer and composer Pablo Alfonso Fernández Gallo, or Paulito FG as he is popularly known, in 1992. The group has been made up of professional musicians since its inception.

The combination of the purest Cuban music with contemporary sounds is the element that identifies the group and the music they perform, being their characteristic musical seal.

La Élite is one of the Cuban popular music orchestras that has been a top favorite with the public since its inception, and its songs have topped radio charts both nationally and in several foreign cities: New York, Miami, and Bogotá. Always at the forefront, it was the first Cuban group to incorporate a woman into an all-male orchestra, although the women were dancers, not musicians.

La Élite’s repertoire includes numerous songs and various versions of famous songs. It encompasses diverse musical genres, such as rumba, son, jazz, salsa, rap, bolero, and ballads.

Tú no me calculas, from 1993, is the group’s first album, recorded under the Cuban label EGREM (Calle 3ra No. 1008 e/ 10 y 12, Miramar, Playa. Havana).

With a Clear Conscience, a CD produced in 1997 for the same record label as the first, is seen by critics as Pablo and La Élite’s best work, as well as one of the best albums of the entire Timba genre that emerged in the 1990s.

To celebrate the group’s tenth anniversary, on April 19, 2002, they performed a grand concert at La Piragua in Havana. For three hours, they played a wealth of songs and were accompanied by various guests, including Alexander Abreu and other notable musicians.

Already this year, the orchestra included two female voices among its members, performing counterpoints to Paulito’s voice.

The song “Confío en ti” (I Trust You), from La Élite’s phonogram released in 2007 under the title “Un poquito de to’,” reached the top of the charts in Peru. In this nation, the performances of Paulito FG and his orchestra are eagerly awaited by the public due to their unparalleled popularity.

On La Élite’s 15th anniversary in September 2007, they took their music to countries like Colombia, where they performed several concerts; Peru; the Bahamas; and Mexico, promoting their CD Un poquito de to’.

The album, titled “Sin Etiqueta,” for the Bis Music label, features thirteen tracks, almost entirely composed by Paulito. Among them are songs like “Me gusta Cuba,” “La celosa,” “Bombón,” and “Paciencia.” It consists primarily of dance music.

Among their work plans for 2011, La Élite and Paulito FG plan to tour Europe.

The Elite has performed in countries such as: Colombia, Bahamas, Mexico, Peru, Spain, Japan, France, Finland, Denmark, Holland, USA, Belgium, Switzerland, Argentina and Italy.
