12.21.8 Pablo Fernández Gallo (Paulito FG)

Pablo Alfonso Fernández Gallo, known as Paulito FG, is a Cuban singer, composer, and director of La Élite. He was born on January 11, 1962, in the popular Buena Vista neighborhood of Havana. He acquired his musical taste and talent from his mother, Caridad Gallo, a pianist and poet. From a young age, he sang while his mother accompanied him on the piano. Later, he began teaching various music subjects and playing the bass.
Paulito has a harmonious, well-tuned and melodious voice, with a wide range and a seductive timbre brimming with sensuality.
He began his artistic career when he was discovered and hired by Adalberto Álvarez in 1986. He then joined the orchestra of this prominent Cuban musician, Adalberto Álvarez y su Son, as the lead singer. That same year, he appeared on television for the first time, at the Varadero Popular Song Festival (1986).
He also joined the Dan Den orchestra in 1988 and Joaquín Betancourt’s Opus 13 Orchestra in 1991, establishing himself as a key figure in Cuban music, becoming one of the most popular and iconic artists of Cuban Timba, not only in his homeland but also abroad.
In 1992, he founded his own orchestra, christening it La Élite, which is made up of high-quality Cuban musicians, becoming one of the first orchestras to be preferred by the public who enjoy Cuban popular music.
The repertoire performed by Paulito FG with La Élite encompasses a wide range of musical genres, including rumba, son, jazz, salsa, rap, bolero, and ballads. It includes countless of the singer’s own songs and covers, such as Nek’s “Laura.”
The hallmark of his music is the fusion of Cuban popular roots with the most contemporary musical sounds, displaying a wealth of Cuban identity in each song.
In 1993, his first phonogram, titled Tú no me calculas, was released under the record label EGREM (Calle 3ra No. 1008 e/ 10 y 12, Miramar, Playa. Havana). of Cuba.
The 1997 phonogram, Con la Conciencia Tranquila (EGREM), is considered by specialized critics to be Pablo’s best work or masterpiece and one of the best albums of the entire genre we know as Cuban Timba, since it is a very well-made CD from the recording quality to the design and photography.
Paulo FG was the first Cuban musician to incorporate a woman into an all-male orchestra. The first women he had in the group were not singers or backing vocalists, but dancers. By 2002, La Élite had two female voices, who performed counter-vocals with their conductor’s voice.
On April 19, 2002, on the occasion of his group’s tenth anniversary, he performed a grand concert at La Piragua, Havana, which lasted three hours and included several guests such as Alexander Abreu and other prominent musicians.
The album “Sin Etiqueta,” produced by the Bis Music label, is composed of 13 songs, most of which are his own. It features mostly dance music, utilizing salsa, timba, and reggaeton. It features the track titled “Mi Filosofía,” the result of the collaboration he received from maestro Manolito Simonet. Paulito FG expressed that this production is like him: natural and simple.
From the CD Un poquito de to’, the song “Confío en ti” (Found in You) topped the charts in Peru, thanks to the fame this Cuban artist had gained in that nation, making his performances one of the most anticipated events of the year. This same song was chosen by Paulito for the fourteenth music video of his career.
In September 2007, to celebrate his 15th anniversary, Pablo performed successfully in Peru, Colombia, the Bahamas, and Mexico, promoting the aforementioned album.
His songs have consistently ranked among the top favorites among Cuban audiences. He was also the first Cuban artist to have a fan club. For some time now, he has been arranging all the songs he performs with his orchestra. He was featured on NG La Banda’s CD, “En la calle.”
The performances of this Salsa smotherman, as he is also known, showcase a wealth of natural talent. The audiences range from all ages, races, and cultural backgrounds. The most typical aspect of his show is his frequent kneeling with the phrases “pa’l piso” or “elevator,” which became very common, as well as his improvisations.
He has made numerous contributions to Cuban music and culture, not only in his own right, but also in contributing to the training of new professional musicians. This is evident in a national tour he undertook in 2010, with the aim of raising funds for artistic education, through which he released his album Sin Etiqueta.
Paulo has popularized numerous songs throughout his musical career, among which we can mention: Coincidence, Fatality, The Speculation of Havana, Suffocation, The Postcard, Ana Elena, Paper Illusion, We are on the scene, I am the good one, I was the one who threw you out.
