12.21.11 David Álvarez


David Álvarez, a prominent Cuban singer and guitarist, was born in 1972 in Manzanillo, located in the eastern province of Granma. He studied classical guitar and percussion at the Esteban Salas Conservatory (Santa Lucia No. 304, San Félix y San Pedro, Santiago de Cuba).

He joined the troubadour Pedro Luis Ferrer’s group in 1989, already being a member of the Cuban song movement known as Nueva Trova.

He created his own musical group in the 1990s, in 1994 to be exact, and has served as its director and lead singer ever since. In the group, he performs traditional Cuban music and other Cuban musical genres such as guarachas, rumbas, guajiras, songs, sones, and boleros.

The songs that make up the repertoire of his group Juego de Manos are composed by David. They address themes of everyday life and love, and are peppered with humor and double entendres. Among them are Solavaya, Domingo, and Amor a primera vista.

With his second album, released under the title Mundo loco and produced by Tumi Music, David Álvarez won the award given by specialized critics in the Adolfo Guzmán Competition.

Along with his group, David has performed at major national events, such as the Grapefruit Festival held on the Isle of Youth in 2005. He has also performed the theme song for the AIDS campaign and the theme song for the 2005 summer campaign.

In the first half of 2010, he went on a successful national tour with Juego de Manos, culminating in a major concert in Havana.

He has performed his music in countless theaters, plazas, and nightclubs throughout Cuba, as well as on several international tours to countries such as Portugal, Venezuela, Spain, and Guatemala. He has shared the stage with Cuban music icons such as Compay Segundo and Eliades Ochoa.

Álvarez’s work as a composer is made up of: Love at First Sight (tango), Four Words, Pain, Sunday, The Kiss, Juana the Crazy, My Wake, Girl, To Always Have You, José Daniel, Solavaya and They Are Too Much.

He has received several awards, including the Adolfo Guzmán Contest, the Saborit Contest, and the Lucas Contest, as well as numerous other awards from Tropicana International Magazine and the Fama y Aplausos program.
