12.21.17 Pedro Pablo Pérez Vargas

Pedro Pablo Pérez Vargas, a prominent Cuban orchestra conductor, was born in the eastern Cuban province of Santiago de Cuba. Descended from a musical family, his father, Fernando Pérez Griñan, was one of the guitarists of the Santiago de Cuba trova.
He has no formal musical training, having suffered from health problems and being frequently hospitalized since childhood. Some time later, he moved to the capital of the Cuban archipelago with his mother. There, he took private trumpet lessons and attended sound courses.
As a sound engineer, he worked with important figures in Cuban music, including Mayra Caridad Valdés, Raúl Gómez and Leonor Zamora, the group Galaxia, and Héctor Téllez. With the latter, he began playing minor percussion while also managing the sound.
In the group Laye Laye and Paulo FG, Pedro Pablo Pérez worked as producer and representative.
In 1996, on December 4th, he founded his own orchestra, Bakuleyé, of which he is the director. He has also received several awards, including the First Prize for Popular Music at the Lucas Awards (1997) and the Most Popular New Orchestra in Cuba that same year.
In 1997, Pedro Pablo Pérez Vargas released his orchestra’s debut album, La Fiebre del Ula Ula. In 1998, he performed with Bakuleyé at the World Festival of Youth and Students in Portugal. Two years later, he appeared as a guest at the Record Fair in Bogotá, Colombia.
From 2001 to 2006, he and his group toured Mexico, performing in various venues.
