13.3.1 Alexis Bosch Méndez.

Alexis Bosch Méndez, a distinguished Cuban pianist, percussionist, arranger, and composer, was born on June 18, 1966, in Havana. He graduated from the Amadeo Roldán Conservatory (Rastro No. 1 and Espada, Centro Habana, Havana), where he completed his secondary level musical studies. In 1991, he graduated as a popular music orchestra conductor. He is a leading exponent of contemporary Cuban jazz and popular music.
In 2004, he performed at the Cully International Jazz Festival in Switzerland, where he shared a concert with Eddy Palmieri. That same year, he performed in Tokyo with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.
Four years later, he performed alongside prominent Cuban pianists such as Chucho Valdés, Ernán Lopez-Nussa, Harold Lopez-Nussa, Rolando Luna, and Dayamir González in a concert titled “The Vanguard of Cuban Pianists.” In August 2010, Alexis Bosch and his Cuban Jazz Project performed at several Norwegian festivals, including the Oslo Jazz Festival, Sildajazz, Haugesund, and Varanger Festivalen.
Throughout his musical career, he has been a member of various groups such as Afrojazz, led by Bobby Carcassés; Diákara; Habana Ensemble; and Charanga Habanera.
Alexis Bosch has shared the stage with distinguished musical figures, including Dave Valentín, Eddi Palmieri, Tito Puente, Chucho Valdés, Waldo Madera, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Giovanni Hidalgo, Sexto Sentido, Ray Charles, Merceditas Valdés, Richard Egües, and Compay Segundo. He has performed his music on numerous stages in countries such as Venezuela, Brazil, Switzerland, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, France, the United States, and Denmark.
He has performed in venues such as the Teatro Alfa in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he shared the stage with Chucho Valdés and Brazilian composer and singer Ed Motta; and Mexico City’s El Zócalo Plaza, where he performed with the participants of the CD Encuentros en La Habana.
He was one of the ten pianists selected for the album Amor y Piano in tribute to Frank Emilio. He is a member of the permanent jury of the Jojazz International Competition. He served as co-producer of the CD Irakere 30 Años.
Alexis Bosch and his Quintet perform jazz music, Latin jazz standards, and Cuban music with contemporary arrangements.
He is the director of the Cuban Jazz Project, which is made up of professional musicians from different generations and styles. Its roster includes Orlando Sánchez (Cubajazz) on saxophone; Danae Blanco, vocalist; Josef Koumbas, Isis Flores, and Polito Ibáñez; the duo Obsesión; José Hermida on bass; Rodney Barreto on drums, with whom Ramsés Rodríguez, Keisel Jiménez, and Yissy García alternate. Emilito del Monte is on percussion, frequently joined by Guillermito del Toro and Otico Selís. Robertico García is on trumpet.
Among his discography, Round Tumbao stands out, the title with which this Cuban musician began as the leader of his own quintet, which bears his name. The members of the group and musicians who participated in the album included Orlando Sánchez Soto (tenor sax, clarinet, and backing vocals); José Ernesto Hermida (bass); Ramsés Rodríguez Baral (drums and backing vocals); and Emilio del Monte (congas, percussion set, and backing vocals). Guest artists included José Carlos Acosta (tenor sax); Robertico García (trumpet and flugelhorn); Vania (vocals); and Emilio Martíni and Danae Blanco (backing vocals).
Alexis Bosch Méndez has composed more than eighty works for various instruments and instrumental formats, including piano, two guitars, percussion ensembles, wind quartets, trios, and quintets. He also includes dance music, songs, and Latin jazz pieces. He is also the author of educational pieces for elementary percussion ensembles.
Among the awards he has garnered we can mention the albums Amor and Piano (2004) and Clásicos de Cuba (2008), both winners of the Cubadisco Award.
Alexis Bosch Méndez belongs to the most elite national and international jazz circles; he is considered by specialized critics to be one of the most versatile and relevant Cuban musicians in the contemporary musical world.
