13.3.3 Alejandro Vargas


Alejandro Vargas, a distinguished Cuban pianist, jazz musician, and composer, was born in the Cuban province of Holguín. His excellent improvisations and his composing skills are some of the qualities that distinguish him as a musician.

Vargas is one of the winners of the JoJazz Young Talent Competition.

The Colibrí record label released a CD by this Cuban musician as part of the collection titled The Young Spirit of Cuban Jazz, which includes an individual CD, a collective DVD, live performances, and a book with a selection of his recorded scores.

This collection brings together the albums of young Cuban jazz musicians whose music exudes great virtuosity; they are also winners of the JoJazz Competition. Among them are Harold Lopéz-Nussa, Dayramir González Vicet, Rolando Luna, Ariel Bringues Ruiz, Carlos Sarduy, and Yasek Manzano Silva.

Alejandro Vargas’s album, his debut studio album, was released under the title Trapiche; it consists of eleven tracks. Some of Trapiche’s titles include Compay, Trapiche, Mima-jaba, Changüí, and Guantanamera. The musical production was handled by the pianist himself and Gloria Ochoa.

His quartet, known as the Oriental Quartet, featured performances by José Manuel Díaz (double bass); Raciel Jiménez (drums); and Ernesto Camilo Vega (clarinet, bass clarinet, and soprano saxophone). He also had singer Diana Fuentes as a guest, showcasing her vocal talents on four of the songs.
