13.4.8 Havana String Quartet

The Havana String Quartet, a Cuban chamber group, was founded with a somewhat unusual instrumental format: a quintet composed of three violins, a viola, and a cello. Since 2008, it has been a quartet comprised of two violins, a viola, and a cello. Its members are: Patricia Quintero (director, violin 1); Zully Morales (violin 2); Rainel Joubert (viola); and Xóchitl Morales (cello).
The musicians of the Havana String Quartet belong to the Havana Chamber Orchestra, conducted by maestro Iván del Prado, which used to split into chamber orchestras for work abroad; these young men always played in the quartet format.
This chamber group, in its performances, presents a repertoire with works by numerous composers such as Haydn, Shostakovich, Borodin, Mozart, and Dvorák.
The Havana String Quartet has participated in several musical events, including the second Leo Brouwer Chamber Music Festival in 2010. They performed there for the first time, having been chosen by the maestro for the event. They performed every day of the event.
They shared the stage with internationally renowned musical figures such as Víctor Pellegrini and Miguel Trápaga. The quintet performed “Beatlerianas,” a piece for string quartet and guitar written by Leo Brouwer, accompanied by Pellegrini on guitar. They also performed the world and Cuban premieres of a quartet by Alejandro García Caturla; a quartet by the young composer Keyla Orozco; a work by Magaly Ruíz; and also Brouwer’s Gismontiana, for string quartet and guitar quartet, a tribute to Maestro Gismonti.
